Impending free-agent QB Dak Prescott (ankle) is reportedly making such good progress from his ankle injury and subsequent surgeries that the Dallas Cowboys want to get a 'big-time, long-term deal now,' according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys do not want to franchise tag Prescott again. Instead, it's past time to get a long-term deal done. Before his injury in 2020, Prescott was dealing the rock better than ever. He's a QB1 for Fantasy GMs and should get a contract that makes him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Godwin added that his goal is a long-term deal, but he would also be 'fine' with the franchise tag in 2021 and a long-term deal next year. Reports have indicated that Mike Evans is willing to take a pay cut to keep teammates in Tampa for another run. The Buccaneers have to figure out what to do with Godwin, but their first priority is likely signing pass-rusher Shaq Barrett to a new long-term deal.

Patriots | Cam Newton open to short-term deal with NE    Mon Feb 22, 05:22 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Cam Newton said he would be open to signing a one-year contract with the Patriots this offseason.

Footballguys view: Newton is set to hit the open market when the new league year begins. The Patriots are in need of quarterback help, and they may be considering a rookie like Mac Jones (Alabama) in the 2021 NFL draft. They could bring in Newton to start while the rookie gets up to speed. Newton was 'meh' as the starter in 2020 but perhaps the team thinks he deserves one more year as a starting option.

Footballguys view: Williams has plenty of power to his game and he can work well as a receiver out of the backfield. The Packers have him and Aaron Jones set to hit free agency, but they have A.J. Dillon to take over in the backfield if one or both do not return.

Jets | Sam Darnold drawing interest    Mon Feb 22, 12:48 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold has drawn real trade interest, but the team wants to fully evaluate all the quarterbacks in the NFL draft before making a decision.

Footballguys view: Darnold should be drawing interest. He's still only 23-years old, and some teams may think they can get his career on track. Darnold's career wasn't done any favors by former Jets head coach Adam Gase. We should see him moved before the 2021 NFL draft, and that means the Jets will be in the market for a quarterback like Zach Wilson (BYU) at no.2 overall.

Eagles | Alshon Jeffery likely gone    Mon Feb 22, 11:35 AM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery is likely to be a cap casualty this offseason, in the opinion of MMQB's Peter King.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Eagles already moved on from DeSean Jackson, and now it's time for Jeffery to get dumped. They would've done it a year or two ago, but the contract Jeffery signed was great for him and bad for the team. If healthy, some team could want Jeffery around as a veteran in the room and reserve player.

Eagles | Corey Clement likely to go    Mon Feb 22, 11:16 AM

Philadelphia Eagles impending free-agent RB Corey Clement is not expected to re-sign with the Eagles.

Footballguys view: Clement can be a good reserve back somewhere else. He can make plays as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. The Eagles have Miles Sanders as their lead back and backup Boston Scott is good too. Without Clement on the roster, expect the Eagles to make a move for a running back ...likely in the 2021 NFL draft.

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson has registered a league-high 66 completions on throws of at least 20 yards downfield since the start of the 2019 season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Watson has great touch and accuracy when throwing down the field. He doesn't hesitate to attack a defense and he knows how to lead his receivers in stride so they can gain more yards after the big throw.

Football Team | Terry McLaurin scratching the surface?    Sun Feb 21, 08:24 PM

Washington Football Team WR Terry McLaurin is 'one of the better up-and-coming wideouts' in the NFL, according to San Francisco 49ers CB Richard Sherman, and Sherman believes McLaurin is being held back by Washington's lack of weapons. 'If he had anybody else beside him and they couldn't just double him and cloud him all the time he'd be special,' Sherman said.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Look at what McLaurin has been able to do with average to below-average quarterback play over the last two seasons. If Washington gets a high-quality quarterback then that will just mean better things for McLaurin and his production.

NFL | Travis Etienne a receiving threat    Sun Feb 21, 07:53 PM

Clemson RB Travis Etienne's 588 receiving yards in 2020 were more than he recorded in his first three collegiate seasons combined.

Footballguys view: Etienne made a concentrated effort to improve as a receiver during his college career. His speed, burst and acceleration make him a big play just waiting to happen anytime he touches the rock. Expect Etienne to be one of the first, if not the first, running backs selected in the 2021 NFL draft.

Cowboys | Amari Cooper could rework deal    Sun Feb 21, 04:30 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper may be asked to restructure his contract this offseason because the team could save around $14 million in salary cap space if they rework the deal.

Footballguys view: Cooper has undergone ankle surgery (back in January) but he'll be fine for training camp and will be the no.1 receiver for the Cowboys once again. He's on the books for $22 million and there is $28 million remaining in dead money. We'll see if the two sides work out a new deal that helps both parties involved. The Cowboys need to figure out a deal with QB Dak Prescott and have extra money for free agency.

Browns | Baker Mayfield to have option picked up    Sun Feb 21, 02:16 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield will have his fifth-year option exercised this offseason.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Mayfield was the no.1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft and he's turned into a leader and led the Browns to the playoffs in 2020. The option is expected to cost the team around $20 million, depending on where the 2022 NFL salary cap lands after the TV deals are signed. If he plays well in 2021, Mayfield and the Browns will work on an extension to make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league.
