Falcons | Russell Gage to expand role?    Fri Jun 11, 11:26 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Russell Gage Jr. has 'grown his game' and will play more than just the slot, according to head coach Arthur Smith. 'So we envision Russ playing multiple spots,' Smith said.

Footballguys view: With Julio Jones traded away, the Falcons are going to have more work for guys like Gage. He didn't do much with a larger opportunity in 2020, so we'll see if he can work better this year by playing all over the field.

Falcons | Kyle Pitts being fast tracked    Fri Jun 11, 09:42 AM

Atlanta Falcons first-round pick TE Kyle Pitts is being force-fed in practice in order to integrate him into the offense. Pitts has been moving around the formations in the open OTAs and the mandatory minicamp.

Footballguys view: Pitts could become the centerpiece of the pass offense and threaten George Kittle for TE3 status in the fantasy football ranks. His arrow is pointing way up and you probably need to reach for him to secure his services in redraft leagues. It could prove to be a brilliant move.

Falcons | Julio Jones officially gone    Wed Jun 9, 05:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones and a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft were officially dealt to the Tennessee Titans Wednesday, June 9, in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2022 draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft.

Footballguys view: The Falcons move forward with Calvin Ridley as their no.1 receiver. The addition of first-round rookie TE Kyle Pitts should help cover up the loss of a superstar like Jones.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley recovering from foot surgery    Wed Jun 9, 01:17 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley (foot) underwent 'minor' foot surgery two weeks ago to address a lingering issue from last season.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate that Ridley should be fine for the start of training camp. With Julio Jones traded to the Titans, Ridley is the no.1 receiver on the depth chart and projecting him for around 100 catches in 2021 feels right. His ADP has risen because of the Jones trade, and Ridley is going off the board as one of the first five wide receivers selected in fantasy drafts - usually at the turn or somewhere early in the second round.

Falcons | Atlanta agrees to trade Julio Jones    Sun Jun 6, 12:07 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones will be traded to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for at least a second-round draft choice, according to sources. The deal may not be official for a few days since Jones needs to take a physical.

Footballguys view: Kyle Pitts and Calvin Ridley will both have outsized opportunity in the wake of this deal, and Russell Gage should get a shot to start. The new regime should also give Olamide Zaccheaus and sixth-round pick Frank Darby a chance to win more playing time in the vacuum left by the departure of one of the true icons of the franchise.

Falcons | Julio Jones has key request    Sat Jun 5, 04:05 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones wants to be traded to a contender but also one with a big-armed quarterback who can throw deep, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN Saturday, June 5.

Falcons | Hayden Hurst motivated for 2021    Fri Jun 4, 01:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons TE Hayden Hurst will be a free agent following the 2021 season after his fifth-year option wasn't picked up, and he's aiming for a strong showing. 'It's a big year for me, now,' Hurst said Thursday, June 3. 'Obviously, being a free agent at the end of the year. I've got my priorities in line, and I know what I need to do this year.'

Footballguys view: Hurst is in a tough spot with Kyle Pitts in town, but if Julio Jones is traded, he'll be in line for more snaps and targets in a two tight end offense. Hurst's fantasy value is on life support right now, but he's right to be looking to his next team for possible growth.

Falcons | Julio Jones may look for new deal    Mon May 31, 02:18 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones may ask for a new contract if he is traded to a new team this offseason, according to a source. He currently has three years left on his contract worth $38.326 million.

Footballguys view: Any team that trades for Jones is likely going to look for a new deal to make his contract more friendly to the salary cap. Jones is currently signed through the 2023 season. His cap hit in 2021 is around $23 million and there is $40.5 million remaining in dead money.

Falcons | Big offer for Julio Jones?    Thu May 27, 10:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones has been a part of several trade offers, including at least one offer of a future first-round pick, sources told Dianna Russini of ESPN.

Footballguys view: That's not surprising. Teams like the Colts, Raiders, Chargers and Ravens should be interested in the veteran superstar. We should see Jones dealt in the near future as the Falcons go over these deals.

Falcons | Atlanta signs Tajae Sharpe    Mon May 24, 05:13 PM

Free-agent WR Tajae Sharpe (Chiefs) signed with the Atlanta Falcons Monday, May 24. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Sharpe is a reserve receiver type who is going to try and earn a spot with his special teams ability. If (when?) the Falcons trade Julio Jones, that gives a guy like Sharpe a better shot to make the 53-man roster.

Falcons | Julio Jones requested trade    Mon May 24, 11:49 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones requested a trade a few months ago, according to sources, and that's when the team began listening to offers.

Footballguys view: We are unlikely to see Jones in a Falcons uniform this year. The speculation is that a second-round pick would be needed to secure the services of the superstar veteran receiver. Teams like the Ravens, Raiders, Chargers and Patriots could be interested. Earlier reports also indicated Jones may want to play with Cam Newton. Great news for the Patriots as Newton is their starter...for now. This Jones thing is far from over, so as always stay tuned.

Falcons | Matt Ryan steady    Mon May 24, 09:48 AM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan has completed at least 65 percent of his passes with a 90-plus QB rating, 4,400-plus yards and 26-plus touchdown passes in each of the last three years.

Footballguys view: Ryan is steady, that's the name of his game. While he may not quite be the player he used to be (MVP level), Ryan is still one of the better starters in the league and has plenty of football left. If (when?) Julio Jones is traded away, we'll see how Ryan's game and numbers shift in 2021.

Falcons | Julio Jones for a second?    Mon May 24, 09:17 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones could be acquired for a second-round pick, in the opinion of SI.com's Albert Breer.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. There should be several teams interested in the veteran superstar receiver. That list could include teams like the Ravens, Chargers, Raiders and Patriots. In fact, earlier reports have indicated Jones may want to go to New England to play with Cam Newton. Stay tuned.

Falcons | Julio Jones trade/restructure or Grady Jarrett extension/restructure coming    Thu May 20, 02:37 PM

Jeff Schultz, of the Athletic, reports that sources tell him that trading or restucturing the deal of Julio Jones or restructuring or extending Grady Jarrett are the only two options for the Falcons to be able to free up enough cap room to sign their draft picks. Schultz writes that the team hasn't approached Jarrett about a new deal and they prefer not to restructure Jones' contract, so a trade of Jones is "the most logical scenario". He also shared that the selection of Kyle Pitts at #4 was because the team thinks he is special and didn't believe enough in Justin Fields to take him fourth.

Footballguys view: It's time to start thinking about what the values of Calvin Ridley and Kyle Pitts will look like if Jones is traded. Obviously both will go up, although it will take the shine off of Matt Ryan's ceiling in fantasy leagues. Schultz names Baltimore, New England, Indianapolis, New England, and San Francisco as possible destinations, adding that Tennessee could show interest but is near the cap ceiling.

Falcons | Julio Jones still a trade candidate    Thu May 20, 01:25 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones remains on trading block, but the team is having trouble finding a partner. One of the primary hurdles is Jones' $15.3 million guaranteed salary in 2021, which the Falcons likely would have to pay a portion of if Jones is dealt.

Footballguys view: Of all of the options available to open up the necessary cap room to get their draft picks signed, trading Jones is the most attractive in terms of the team's future direction and goals. If they do get a trade done, the compensation will probably be less than fans of the team expect.

Falcons | Jack Batho waived    Thu May 20, 01:13 PM

Atlanta Falcons OT Jack Batho on Thursday, May 20, was waived by the team.

Footballguys view: Batho is a product of the South Dakota School of Mines so he's more of an unknown than a typical UDFA. He has battled injuries and hasn't been able to concentrate on football as much as players from the big programs have. We'll see if he gets a look elsewhere after going undrafted this year.

Falcons | William Sweet lands on his feet in Atlanta    Wed May 19, 04:40 PM

Free-agent OT William Sweet (Cowboys) was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Sweet went undrafted in 2019 and has spent some time on a few rosters before landing on the Cowboys practice squad last year. He will have trouble making the Falcons roster because they drafted Jalen Mayfield in the third round this year and he should take up any developmental roster spot for offensive line that the Falcons want to reserve for a player who may not be active on game days.

Falcons | No guarantees in Atlanta backfield    Mon May 10, 07:22 PM

Atlanta Falcons RBs Mike Davis, Javian Hawkins, Caleb Huntley and Qadree Ollison are all expected to compete for touches in the backfield in 2021, according to comments made by running backs coach Desmond Kitchings. According to Tori McElhaney of The Athletic, Kitchens noted how competitive the running back group will be and that 'the door is wide open' for anyone to take over.

Footballguys view: Davis has the experience and could come out on top but that's not a guarantee. We'll have to see how this competition shakes out during training camp. Davis (the first Falcons RB getting drafted) has a current ADP of RB35 (7.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Atlanta adds Juwan Green    Thu May 6, 03:39 PM

Free-agent WR Juwan Green (Falcons) signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, May 6. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Green is back with the Falcons. He originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Albany in 2020 and spent his rookie season on the team's practice squad. He'll compete for a spot on the 53-man roster this year.

Falcons | Atlanta adds 18 UDFAs    Mon May 3, 01:44 PM

Undrafted free-agent OT Jack Batho IV (South Dakota School of Mines), DT Zac Dawe (Brigham Young), LB Dorian Etheridge (Louisville), OG Bryce Hargrove (Pittsburgh), RB Caleb Huntley (Ball State), LB Eli Howard (Texas Tech), S Dwayne Johnson (San Diego State), LB Kobe Jones (Mississippi State), CB Marcus Murphy (Mississippi State), OG Ryan Neuzil (Appalachian State), WR Antonio Nunn (Buffalo), S JR Pace (Northwestern), LB Alani Pututau (Adams State), TE John Raine (Northwestern), OG Joe Sculthorpe (North Carolina State), OT Keion Smith (Fayetteville State), LB Erroll Thompson (Mississippi State) and WR Austin Trammell (Rice) agreed to terms with the Atlanta Falcons Monday, May 3. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Huntley is an interesting running back to monitor. He's a strong runner with a low center of gravity and plenty of leg drive. Huntley wasn't proven as a receiver out of the backfield but he gives great effort anytime he touches the ball. The Falcons need running back help and Huntley could work his way onto the 53-man roster but as a priority free agent he's more likely to land on the practice squad.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley's option exercised    Mon May 3, 01:11 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley had his fifth-year option was exercised Monday, May 3. He is scheduled to make $11.116 million in 2022.

Footballguys view: Ridley had his breakout season in 2020 and finished as the no.4 fantasy receiver in standard scoring leagues. The Falcons will continue to use him as a featured part of their passing game. Fantasy GMs can lean on him as a WR1 and Ridley has a current ADP of WR6 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Hayden Hurst's option not picked up    Mon May 3, 08:43 AM

Atlanta Falcons TE Hayden Hurst will not have his fifth-year option exercised, and he'll be a free agent after the 2021 season.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. With the Falcons selecting TE Kyle Pitts with the no.4 overall pick it's a sign that they'll likely move on from Hurst after this season. After struggling to impress with the Ravens, Hurst did flash that first-round talent in his first year with the Falcons last season. When he hits the open market in 2022 there should be more than a few teams interested in making him a no.1 tight end.

Falcons | Kyle Pitts the total package    Sun May 2, 08:23 PM

Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts led all tight ends in the 2021 draft class in average depth of target and yards per route run, and he didn't drop any of his 66 targets.

Footballguys view: Pitts is the total package as a receiver, because that's what he basically is. There is "TE" next to his name, but his game is that of a "WR" and he is going to be tough for defenses to contend with.

Falcons | Feleipe Franks heading to Atlanta    Sat May 1, 07:50 PM

Undrafted free-agent QB Feleipe Franks (Arkansas) agreed to terms with the Atlanta Falcons Saturday, May 1, according to his agents. Terms of the contract weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Franks is an athletic quarterback who can work the short-to-intermediate game. He's got good size and is known as a teachable prospect. We'll see what kind of development he can have as a passer (mainly needs to speed up his clock) in Atlanta.

Falcons | Javian Hawkins plans to sign with Atlanta    Sat May 1, 07:06 PM

Undrafted free-agent RB Javian Hawkins (Louisville) agreed to terms with the Atlanta Falcons Saturday, May 1, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hawkins is a gap runner with good burst to and through the hole. He's a smaller back (185 pounds) and won't push the pile, but he's not timid about running between the tackles.

Falcons | Atlanta still on hunt for RBs    Sat May 1, 04:55 PM

Falcons | Kyle Pitts joins Atlanta    Thu Apr 29, 08:51 PM

Florida TE Kyle Pitts was selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Pitts is a super-sized wide receiver who happens to play tight end. He's a mismatch no matter where he lines up on the field. Pitts can make an instant impact as a fantasy asset and should be a reliable target for QB Matt Ryan in 2021. He's in consideration for TE1 production as a rookie.

Falcons | Atlanta interested in three players    Thu Apr 29, 03:08 PM

Florida TE Kyle Pitts, Ohio State QB Justin Fields and North Dakota State QB Trey Lance are candidates to be selected by the Atlanta Falcons if they do not trade the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, according to NFL Network's Steve Wyche.

Footballguys view: Pitts would be a great fit for them. They could go with a young quarterback to groom behind Matt Ryan for a year or two. However, a player like Pitts could get them in deep playoff contention for 2021. We'll see what new GM Terry Fontenot decides on Thursday night.

Falcons | Kyle Pitts would be fine consolation    Thu Apr 29, 01:21 PM

University of Florida TE and 2021 NFL Draft prospect Kyle Pitts would be the selection the Atlanta Falcons would be eager to make with the fourth overall pick Thursday, April 29, if they don't trade the pick.   Falcons | Julio Jones on trade market?    Mon Apr 26, 08:52 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones has been the subject of trade calls this offseason. A trade couldn't happen before June 1, but it could happen this offseason.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here when you think about the new regime in Atlanta. The salary cap is cramped with the Falcons, so they could try and move the star veteran receiver to free up some space. Jones has a cap hit of $23 million in 2021 and $20 million in 2022. We'll see if some team in need of wide receiver help (Raiders?) tries to make something happen.

Falcons | QB coach to attend Trey Lance workout    Mon Apr 19, 01:04 PM

Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach Charles London will be one the three representatives for the Falcons that will attend North Dakota State QB Trey Lance's workout Monday, April 19. Passing game specialist T.J. Yates and assistant college scouting director Dwaune Jones will also attend the workout.

Footballguys view: The Falcons have the no.4 overall pick and may choose a quarterback like Lance to groom behind Matt Ryan for a year or two. Lance is one of the best quarterbacks in this draft class and reminds some in the scouting community of Cam Newton when he came out of Auburn.

Falcons | Atlanta sending 3 to Trey Lance pro day    Sat Apr 17, 01:11 PM

North Dakota State QB and 2021 NFL Draft prospect Trey Lance is holding his second pro day Monday, April 19, and the Atlanta Falcons, who currently hold the draft's No. 4 overall pick, will send their full allotment of three personnel members to observe. The trio will be different than the three the Falcons sent to Lance's first pro day, giving them six sets of eyes on the quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Falcons could add a guy like Lance and give him one year to groom behind Matt Ryan. New GM Terry Fontenot will have that choice even though reports indicate owner Arthur Blank does not yet want to move on from his veteran quarterback. The Falcons could also deal the no.4 overall pick if they get a deal that interests them.

Atlanta Falcons RB Ito Smith on Thursday, April 15, was released by the team.

Footballguys view: The Falcons are going to have a new-look running back room in 2021. Mike Davis should be the lead back and they just signed WR Cordarrelle Patterson who can be used as a runner or receiver. We expect them to be interested in running backs in the 2021 NFL draft.
