Broncos | Dionatae Spencer signs tender    Thu Apr 15, 12:19 PM

Free agent WR/KR Diontae Spencer has signed his exclusive-rights tender to remain with the Denver Broncos, his agent announced Thursday, April 15.

Footballguys view: ERFAs don't have much choice as they can either sign the tender or choose not to play football. Spencer is a return man for the Broncos, and once in awhile he can be used on Jet sweeps and WR screens. With Courtland Sutton returning healthy this year, Spencer is no.5 on the depth chart at best.

Broncos | Drew Lock working with Peyton Manning    Mon Apr 12, 01:24 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has been working with former NFL QB Peyton Manning this offseason, according to OG Dalton Risner. Lock and Manning have been watching film during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Lock needed to get better this offseason when it comes to understanding what he's seeing on the field. He's got the physical tools, but his propensity to throw interceptions needs to be cleaned up. It might be too late for him with the Broncos if they move up in the draft for a first-round quarterback.

Broncos | Denver had interest in Mitchell Trubisky    Sun Mar 28, 11:02 AM

The Denver Broncos reportedly showed interest in former Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky during free agency before he ultimately decided to sign with the Buffalo Bills, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: It's a pretty well-known fact the Broncos want competition (or a flat-out upgrade) for Drew Lock. They had interest in Matthew Stafford and thought they had him before the Rams pulled off that trade. They have been interested in Ryan Fitzpatrick, Trubisky and others but have not yet found the right guy. That player may come through the 2021 NFL draft but at the no.9 overall pick all the top QBs may be gone. Either way, Lock is in a make-it-or-break-it year for the Broncos.

Broncos | Denver intrigued by Zach Wilson?    Thu Mar 25, 09:53 PM

Brigham Young QB Zach Wilson's pro day Friday, March 26, will be attended by Denver Broncos general manager George Paton and quarterbacks coach Mike Shula.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are looking to upgrade from Drew Lock. They might add a veteran via trade (Gardner Minshew?) to compete with Lock in training camp, but they might also go for a rookie in the first round. They have the no.9 overall pick and Wilson should be off the board by that time. If they love Wilson, they'll have to move up to get him.

Broncos | Nick Vannett released    Tue Mar 23, 12:29 PM

Denver Broncos TE Nick Vannett was released Tuesday, March 23.

Footballguys view: Vannett isn't much of a blocker and not much of a receiver either. The Broncos will now be looking for another tight end to put behind starter Noah Fant on the depth chart.

Broncos | Phillip Lindsay moving on    Thu Mar 18, 10:05 AM

Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay and the team mutually agreed to rescind his restricted free-agent tender Thursday, March 18, according to his agent Mike McCartney.

Footballguys view: Lindsay has never been fully appreciated by the Broncos and could find great success elsewhere. He's a buy low in dynasty leagues right now. Mike Boone will replace him on the running back depth chart.

Broncos | Mike Boone gets deal with Denver    Wed Mar 17, 07:24 PM

Free-agent RB Mike Boone (Vikings) signed a two-year contract worth $2.6 million with the Denver Broncos Wednesday, March 17, according to a source. The deal reportedly includes a $1.6 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Boone is a big play waiting to happen. New Broncos GM George Paton spent over a decade with the Vikings, so he knows Boone's game well. Boone will fill in behind Melvin Gordon in the Broncos offense. If the team keeps Phillip Lindsay, then the two will compete for that spot in the rotation.

Broncos | Denver officially tenders three    Tue Mar 16, 06:48 PM

Updating previous stories, Denver Broncos WR Tim Patrick and LB Alexander Johnson were officially tagged with second-round tenders Tuesday, March 16. RB Phillip Lindsay received a right-of-first-refusal tender.

Footballguys view: Patrick will stick with the team for one more year. He filled in admirably for Courtland Sutton last year but is now fourth on the depth chart. Lindsay should have plenty of suitors and might have played his last snap for the Broncos.

Broncos | Phillip Lindsay gets low RFA tender    Mon Mar 15, 10:51 PM

Denver Broncos restricted free-agent RB Phillip Lindsay (undrafted) was tendered at the original-round level Monday, March 15.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are risking Lindsay here. There should be more interest for him than some think. He'll be able to shop his services and if he leaves Denver (they have right of refusal on any deal he signs) the Broncos won't get anything in return as he was an undrafted free agent in 2018.

Broncos | Denver checks out Trey Lance at pro day    Sat Mar 13, 07:35 PM

North Dakota State QB Trey Lance held his pro day Saturday, March 13, and Denver Broncos general manager George Paton and quarterbacks coach Mike Shula were in attendance.

Footballguys view: The Broncos could have interest in Lance, but he's unlikely to be there when they select at no.9 overall. If they want him, they'll have to move up...perhaps as high as no.3. Lance is a mobile quarterback with a big arm and high football intelligence.

Link to story

Broncos | GM to attend Trey Lance's workout    Thu Mar 11, 03:54 PM

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton will attend North Dakota State QB Trey Lance's Pro Day Friday, March 12, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Paton says that he really likes last year's starter Drew Lock....but since taking over the Broncos he's almost traded for Matthew Stafford, is likely to be incredibly aggressive for Deshaun Watson and now is looking at a quarterback who is likely to be a top-10 pick. The Broncos are looking for an upgrade at quarterback, regardless of what they say about Lock their actions show a change is coming.

Broncos | Melvin Gordon's DUI dismissed    Wed Mar 10, 11:05 AM

Denver Broncos RB Melvin Gordon's DUI charges were dismissed Wednesday, March 10. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving for excessive speeding.

Footballguys view: That's good news for Gordon. The team could have released him without dead money on his contract had he been convicted of the DUI and a suspension been handed down by the NFL. Now, it looks like Gordon won't be suspended. This means he should return as the lead back for the Broncos in 2021. Phillip Lindsay is an RFA and may get signed away from the team.

Broncos | Denver to tender three    Tue Mar 9, 06:40 PM

Broncos | Tim Patrick to be tendered    Fri Mar 5, 09:00 PM

Denver Broncos restricted free-agent WR Tim Patrick is expected to receive a tender, according to general manager George Paton, but Paton didn't reveal the round of the tender.

Footballguys view: Patrick was undrafted out of Utah a few years ago, so an original-round tender would mean Denver would receive no compensation if he signed with another team. Patrick filled in admirably for an injured Courtland Sutton in 2020. With Sutton returning from his knee injury, Patrick will go back to a reserve role.

Broncos | Courtland Sutton running routes    Fri Mar 5, 04:43 PM

Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton (knee) has started running routes as part of his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to general manager George Paton.

Footballguys view: Good news for Sutton here. He missed most of the 2020 season due to this injury and it hurt the Broncos offense. Sutton was just about to take off in the pros after a Pro Bowl season in 2019. Fantasy GMs can look at him as a WR2 with upside no matter who is tossing him the rock this season.

Broncos | Drew Lock to have competition    Fri Mar 5, 12:56 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock struggled with inconsistency in his second season as a starter and is expected to have competition in 2021, even if the Broncos are unable to land a clear upgrade such as the Houston Texans' Deshaun Watson. 'Until Drew proves to be the next great quarterback like the ones that the Denver franchise has been used to in years past, or the ones certain teams around the league have, we're going to always try and bring in competition,' Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said during a news conference Thursday, March 4. 'But I have confidence that Drew can continue to improve.'

Footballguys view: Lock was one of the worst starting quarterbacks in 2020. He threw too many interceptions, got hurt again and missed time plus generally did not look comfortable in the Pat Shurmur offense. The Broncos are going to be all in on getting Deshaun Watson from the Texans. If they don't get Watson, then expect Lock to compete with somebody like Ryan Fitzpatrick in training camp.

Broncos | Tender likely for Phillip Lindsay    Thu Mar 4, 01:04 PM

Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay, a pending restricted free agent, is expected to be tendered by the team this offseason, according to a source. The question is whether the tender offer will be an original-round tender -- in Lindsay's case a no-round tender as he was an undrafted free agent -- or a second-round tender.

Footballguys view: Original round tender means the Broncos will have right of refusal if another team signs him to a contract but they will not receive any compensation if he leaves. That sounds like about the level they'll tender him at. However, a second-round tender would pay Lindsay more and essentially guarantee that he returns to the team for one more year. With a suspension likely for Melvin Gordon, and maybe a release, perhaps that's the best move for Denver.
