Broncos | Phillip Lindsay stronger in 2020    Tue Aug 11, 02:11 PM

Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay recently told Mike Klis of 9News that he gained 10 pounds of muscle this offseason.'Feel good, feel fast. That wrist injury (last year) really did a toll on me when it came to working out. ... So I feel really good, I feel explosive and I feel like I'm going to have a (heck of a) season this year,' Lindsay said.

Footballguys view: Lindsay has added muscle to his frame in order to keep up with the pounding he's taken in two years as the starter for the Broncos. Each of the last two offseasons, Lindsay has spent time rehabbing from a wrist surgery. This year, Lindsay should serve as the backup to Melvin Gordon...although he's likely to get a larger split than most backup running backs out there. The Broncos passing game has a lot of appeal to Fantasy GMs but do not sleep on this Gordon/Lindsay combination which should lead the way offensively.

Broncos | Two linemen ready for practice    Mon Aug 3, 04:45 PM

Denver Broncos OT Elijah Wilkinson (undisclosed) was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, Aug. 3. The team also activated OG Netane Muti from the Active/Non-Football Injury list.

Broncos | Ja'Wuan James opts out    Mon Aug 3, 12:33 PM

Denver Broncos OT Ja'Wuan James opted out of the 2020 season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is a big blow to the Broncos offensive line. James barely played last year as he battled a knee injury. The Broncos were going to have Eli Wilkinson battle Garett Bolles for the starting left tackle job but he's now going to have to start on the right side -- thus, locking Bolles into the left side starter. Mike Munchak is a great offensive line coach and he's got his work cut out for him again in Denver.

Broncos | Jeff Heuerman released    Fri Jul 31, 05:37 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jeff Heuerman was released Friday, July 31.

Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall for quite some time. Heuerman rarely stayed healthy for the Broncos and became mostly just a blocker when he was on the field. He's a veteran with some experience but we don't expect the market to be hot after his services. The Broncos move on with Noah Fant as the starter, Nick Vannett (Heuerman's college teammate) as the backup and primary blocker, plus rookie Albert Okwuegbunam as a potential red-zone threat.

Broncos | Bradley Chubb declares self ready    Fri Jul 31, 01:37 PM

Denver Broncos LB Bradley Chubb (knee) said Friday, July 31, his recovery from ACL surgery has gone well and said he'll be ready for Week 1. 'No doubt about it,' Chubb said in a Zoom media conference call.

Footballguys view: Getting Chubb back will be a great boost for the Broncos defense. Chubb was phenomenal as a rookie in 2018, snaring 12.0 sacks for the Broncos. Last year, Chubb played the 'Khalil Mack' role in the Vic Fangio defense but was only able to get 1.0 sack in four games before getting hurt. Having Chubb back at full strength will greatly help Von Miller on the other side.

Broncos | Denver officially signs seven rookies    Tue Jul 28, 06:08 PM

Updating previous stories, Denver Broncos third-round pick DT McTelvin Agim, seventh-round pick WR Tyrie Cleveland, second-round pick WR KJ Hamler, first-round pick WR Jerry Jeudy, fourth-round pick TE Albert Okwuegbunam, fifth-round pick LB Justin Strnad and seventh-round pick LB Derrek Tuszka all officially signed four-year rookie contracts Tuesday, July 28. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Jeudy has superstar potential in the NFL, reminding some in the scouting community of Odell Beckham Jr. Hamler has speed, speed and more speed that he'll bring to the slot position. Okwuegbunam was a former college teammate of QB Drew Lock and he caught 17 touchdowns from Lock in two seasons at Missouri. The Broncos are a team on the rise and could rise quickly if these rookies perform up to expectations.

Broncos | Zimari Manning sent packing    Tue Jul 28, 05:48 PM

Denver Broncos WR Zimari Manning was released with a Non-Football Injury designation Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Manning was an interesting undrafted free agent the Broncos picked up after the draft this year. That team has a history of finding gems from the UDFA crop but Manning won't get a shot to impress the Broncos in camp due to rosters shrinking in the pandemic.

Broncos | John Elway lowers expectations for rookie class    Tue Jul 28, 03:32 PM

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway said Tuesday, July 28, he's upset about preseason games being canceled this year and has tempered his expectations for younger players.

Footballguys view: That's sad considering who Denver added in the 2020 NFL draft. In the first two rounds, the Broncos selected WRs Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler. Both could have big roles in the passing game as soon as this season. Later, the team added TE Albert Okwuegbunam -- a former college teammate of QB Drew Lock. We'll see if these rookies can help more than Elway thinks, but the class will be behind due to the pandemic taking away minicamp and OTAs.

Broncos | Kyle Peko to sit out    Tue Jul 28, 10:45 AM

Denver Broncos DT Kyle Peko opted out for the 2020 season.

Broncos | Denver signs two rookies    Mon Jul 27, 07:00 PM

Denver Broncos S Kahani Smith, QB Riley Neal, LB Tre' Crawford, WR Kelvin McKnight, RB Khalfani Muhammad, CB Shakial Taylor and C Nico Falah were waived Monday, July 27. The team also released DE Joel Heath.

Footballguys view: Muhammad's days on the roster with the Broncos were numbered when they picked up LeVante Bellamy after the draft. The rookie from Western Michigan has a skill set like that of Phillip Lindsay and could end up on the team's practice squad.

Broncos | Kareem Jackson plans to report on time    Sat Jul 25, 05:11 PM

Denver Broncos S Kareem Jackson (illness) said he has been working out and plans to report to training camp on time. He tested positive for COVID-19 last month.

Footballguys view: Jackson is a leader on and off the field for the Broncos. Their defense has some question marks at the cornerback position but in year two of the Vic Fangio scheme they could finish as a top-15 unit in the league -- especially if guys like Jackson (and Justin Simmons) find a way to get more turnovers.

Broncos | KJ Hamler agrees to contract    Fri Jul 24, 02:12 PM

Denver Broncos WR KJ Hamler agreed to terms on his rookie contract Friday, July 24. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Footballguys view: Hamler should be the #1 slot receiver for the Broncos right away, which means the Daesean Hamilton pick didn't work out - substituting one Penn State receiver for another. Hamler provides speed and quickness to make big plays with excellent options at outside receiver and tight end, although his role could be capped by more two tight end sets after the Broncos also drafted Albert Okwuegbunam, Drew Lock's favorite touchdown target at Missouri.

Broncos | Jerry Jeudy agrees to rookie deal    Thu Jul 23, 11:45 AM

Denver Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy agreed to terms Thursday, July 23, on his four-year, $15.192 million rookie deal that includes a team option for a fifth year, per NFL rules. He will receive 71 percent of his $8.61 million signing bonus upfront, and the entire contract is fully guaranteed.

Footballguys view: Jeudy was arguably the best wide receiver in arguably the best wide receiver draft class in NFL history. He has tremendous quickness and can make defenders look silly in the open field. His quickness allows him to run great and sharp routes, something most rookie receivers can't do. Jeudy should instantly become a favorite target of QB Drew Lock this season.

Broncos | McTelvin Agim agrees to contract    Wed Jul 22, 03:57 PM

Denver Broncos third-round draft choice DT McTelvin Agim agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Broncos Wednesday, July 22, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Agim has six moves to get after the passer and that's outstanding for a big man who weighs around 300 pounds. He gets off the line quickly and can be a disruptive player at defensive tackle or defensive end.

Link to story

Broncos | Derrek Tuszka agrees to terms    Wed Jul 22, 03:27 PM

Denver Broncos seventh-round draft choice LB Derrek Tuszka agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Broncos Wednesday, July 22, worth $3,370,492, according to a source. The deal includes a $75,492 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Tuszka has length and burst around the corner as a pass-rusher. He doesn't have a refined game but the raw materials are there for him to be a part-time pass-rusher in the pros.

Broncos | Four-year deal for Albert Okwuegbunam    Wed Jul 22, 03:19 PM

Denver Broncos fourth-round draft choice TE Albert Okwuegbunam agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Broncos Wednesday, July 22, worth $4,044,040, according to a source. The deal includes a $749,040 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Okwuegbunam was a favorite target of Broncos QB Drew Lock when they were teammates at Missouri. In two seasons, Lock and Okwuegbunam hooked up for 17 touchdowns. Noah Fant is the starter for the Broncos, and the 2019 first-round pick has plenty of upside at the tight end position. Okwuegbunam is larger, stronger and faster -- plus he has a connection with Lock. He could get some red-zone looks as a rookie working as a backup to Fant in 2020.

Broncos | Michael Ojemudia agrees to terms    Tue Jul 21, 05:20 PM

Denver Broncos third-round pick CB Michael Ojemudia agreed to terms on his four-year rookie contract Tuesday, July 21. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ojemudia will be asked to be a starter for the Broncos ASAP. He played almost exclusively zone in college at Iowa and should have an easy transition in Vic Fangio's 'zone dog' defense. Ojemudia tested like a man corner at the Scouting Combine but should be kept off the ball to help him out. He can watch the play unfold in front of him and does a good job of anticipating route trees.

Broncos | Justin Simmons signs tag    Tue Jul 14, 04:47 PM

Updating previous stories, Denver Broncos S Justin Simmons officially signed his one-year franchise tag tender Tuesday, July 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: It sounds like a long term deal was never close. Simmons will get 11.441 million for 2020 and the team will try to sign him to a long term contract next year. His negotiations might have been affected by the uncertainty about 2020 league revenues and the future cap growth or lack thereof.

Broncos | Drew Lock kept it short as a rookie    Sun Jul 5, 05:10 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock's average depth of completion of 4.8 yards was tied with Pittsburgh Steelers QB Devlin Hodges for the second-lowest mark by a quarterback in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Lock has added speed at tight end (fourth round pick Albert Okwuegbunam) and receiver (second round pick KJ Hamler) in the draft, in addition to a high skill level from first round pick Jerry Jeudy, so this should be a number that goes up this year.

Broncos | Noah Fant dangerous after catch    Sun Jun 21, 10:16 PM

Denver Broncos TE Noah Fant's 8.3 yards after catch in 2019 ranked 15th in the NFL and was the best mark among tight ends.

Footballguys view: Fant is a dangerous move tight end who flashed big-time ability as a rookie in 2019. He's got speed and can be a 'seam ripper' for the Broncos offense in 2020 as the starter. Fant will share some playing time with rookie Albert Okwuegbunam this season but he's still the lead player at the position. Fantasy GMs should consider Fant a TE2 with upside this season.

Broncos | McTelvin Agim to be a rotational player    Sun Jun 21, 03:16 PM

Denver Broncos DT McTelvin Agim will be part of a rotation on the defensive line this upcoming season, but defensive coordinator Ed Donatell said he expects Agim to provide interior pass rush on passing downs.

Footballguys view: With Von Miller and Bradley Chubb on the edge the interior pass rushers should have a better time of it in the Vic Fangio defense. Agim could end up having value down the line in deep IDP leagues that require a defensive tackle in the starting lineup.

Broncos | Courtland Sutton a PI magnet    Sat Jun 20, 01:10 PM

Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton has drawn 12 pass-interference penalties in coverage since 2018 -- the second most in the league over that span according to Pro Football Focus data.

Footballguys view: Sutton has a big body, long arms and leaping ability which makes him difficult to get around. Defenders have no choice but to get physical with the young wideout who has just shown us the tip of the iceberg in the NFL. Sutton was able to go over 1,000 yards receiving with three QBs last year (Joe Flacco, Brandon Allen, Drew Lock), something only Kenny Golladay also did in 2019. With Lock entrenched as the starter and Sutton his most experienced target, we could see career-best numbers from the third-year player.

Broncos | Jeff Heuerman may be on bubble    Thu Jun 18, 05:53 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jeff Heuerman is expected to be on the roster bubble during training camp, in the opinion of The Denver Post's Ryan O'Halloran.

Footballguys view: It's going to be doubtful for Heuerman to make the final roster. The team added Nick Vannett in free agency and they selected Albert Okwuegbunam (college teammate of Drew Lock) in the 2020 NFL draft...and oh yeah, Noah Fant is the starter. The Broncos can save around $3.8 million against the cap if Heuerman is released.

Broncos | Brett Rypien may be PS option    Thu Jun 18, 05:49 PM

Denver Broncos QB Brett Rypien is not expected to make the final roster but likely will be a practice squad option if he cleared waivers.

Footballguys view: Rypien looked like a camp arm last year. He's a developmental quarterback the team could keep around on the PS. Drew Lock is the clear-cut starter and veteran Jeff Driskel was added this offseason to be his primary backup.

Broncos | OC: Phillip Lindsay to be involved    Fri Jun 12, 01:12 PM

Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay will still be involved in the team's passing game despite the ballyhooed offseason signing of RB Melvin Grordon, according to new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. 'Listen, I'm all for adding good players at every position,' Shurmur said Thursday, June 11 in a Zoom media conference. 'I feel like Phillip Lindsay's an outstanding player (who) we can hand the ball to or throw the ball to. The fact that we have two running backs now (who) can be very explosive with the ball in their hands, whether you throw it or run it, I think is a good thing.'

Footballguys view: Lindsay hasn't proven to be as good as receiver out of the backfield as Gordon, so don't expect this split to look at all like the Ekeler/Gordon split from the Chargers offense. Lindsay is still worth drafting in typical leagues, but he'll be only a matchup flex unless Gordon gets hurt.

Broncos | OC pleased with Drew Lock's progress    Thu Jun 11, 10:04 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has left offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur 'very impressed' this offseason with his ability to 'keep up with the (offensive) installations.' 'I think he's got a really good feel for the game. He's developing a good feel for what we want to do. If the rumor is true that he's throwing to our players, I think he's learning something there. We'll just try to put it all together here come July,' Shurmur said.

Footballguys view: Lock has a lot of new weapons around him as the Broncos look to upgrade an offense that only scored 17 points per game in 2019. We'll see what Lock can do in his second year and first full season as a starter. As a rookie in 2019, a thumb injury knocked him out for most of the year. He did start five games for the Broncos, going 4-1 in those contests. We'll see if the momentum they built last year can carry over to 2020.

Broncos | KJ Hamler has to clean up drops    Tue Jun 9, 10:43 AM

Denver Broncos second-round pick WR KJ Hamler had nine drops last season at Penn State. 'That was something that we looked at,' said Broncos president of football operations/general manager John Elway. 'I think that when you looked at his ability to catch the ball, it's not because he doesn't have good ball skills. Obviously, he's got just the concentration drops, which are the easy drops that you don't concentrate looking in. ... We felt like we could coach him through that.'

Footballguys view: Hamler had more drops than anyone else in the FBS in 2019. He's got a small catch radius, so passes have to be on the mark and in stride for Hamler to gather them cleanly. We'll see the rookie compete as the no.3/slot receiver for the Broncos behind Courtland Sutton and fellow rookie Jerry Jeudy. Hamler's speed and big-play ability make him a player we love to watch in dynasty formats.

Broncos | Jerry Jeudy working with Drew Lock    Sat Jun 6, 01:01 PM

Denver Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy has been among the players catching passes daily from QB Drew Lock at a Denver-area field.

Footballguys view: Jeudy and Lock could be a great combination in 2020. The first-round pick was arguably the best receiver in this class...a group of wideouts considered to be among the best to ever come into the league. Jeudy is a no.1 receiver...giving the Broncos two such receivers with Courtland Sutton already in place. We'll see if this work in the offseason helps the two get off to a hot start in 2020.

Link to story

Broncos | Jerry Jeudy has a chance to be special    Wed Jun 3, 09:44 PM

Denver Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy may not 'prove to be the best wide receiver in this draft, but he has definitely got a chance,' in the opinion of the Denver Post's Mark Kiszla.'Courtland Sutton has Pro Bowl skills, yet I don't think he's quite at the level of a game-changer. Jeudy could be a game-changer,' Kiszla wrote in a recent mailbag post for the Denver Post.

Footballguys view: Jeudy might one day be better than Sutton but it's unlikely to be this year. Sutton is an ascending talent who has only shown us the tip of the iceberg in terms of what he can be in the NFL. Both are great weapons for second-year QB Drew Lock in 2020 and beyond.

Broncos | Denver's top four receivers set?    Tue Jun 2, 07:15 PM

Denver Broncos WRs Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and Tim Patrick are considered locks to make the 2020 team, according to Ryan O'Halloran of The Denver Post. WRs Diontae Spencer, DaeSean Hamilton, Tyrie Cleveland and Juwann Winfree will compete for the returner and sixth receiver jobs.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Patrick would be ahead of DaeSean Hamilton in our view because of his rare physical gifts (size/speed/athleticism). Hamilton is more of a route-running technician but his hands have been suspect in two years and he doesn't have much juice after the catch. Spencer is a return man who played well for the Broncos, while Cleveland was a late-round pick this year and Winfree was a late-round pick last year. The Broncos all of a sudden have a jam-packed room at the WR position.

Broncos | Phillip Lindsay feels better in new offense    Tue Jun 2, 05:05 PM

Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay said he feels the team's new offense will be better suited to him in 2020. He also said he added about eight pounds this offseason.

Footballguys view: Lindsay is now going to be a backup to Melvin Gordon in 2020 after coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. New offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is usually a one-back coach, which is unlikely to be the case now in Denver. Simply put, Lindsay is too good to keep off the field. That means Gordon should be the lead back and catch plenty of passes out of the backfield. Lindsay could carve out around 10-12 touches per game as a runner and receiver. That makes him a RB4 with upside for Fantasy GMs in 2020.

Broncos | Several TEs may compete for two spots    Sun May 31, 03:46 PM

Denver Broncos TEs Albert Okwuegbunam, Austin Fort and Jake Butt are expected to be competing for two roster spots during training camp. Okwuegbunam is considered a favorite for one of the spots.

Footballguys view: Okwuegbunam was a favorite target of Drew Lock during their playing days together in college at Mizzou. He caught 17 touchdown passes from Lock in two seasons and could be a red-zone threat for the Broncos in 2020 and beyond. Fort looked good in training camp last year as an undrafted rookie out of Wyoming. A knee injury forced him to miss all of 2019. Speaking of knee injuries, Jake Butt just can't stay healthy due to a few knee issues that have plagued his game in college and the pros.
