Browns | CLE not expected to trade either rookie QB Sat Jun 28, 09:31 AM
The Cleveland Browns are unlikely to trade QB Dillon Gabriel or QB Shedeur Sanders before the beginning of the regular season, even though neither of them is expected to win the starting job, according to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe.
Footballguys view: The team believes in Gabriel despite the limitations to his game, and Sanders has a great pure-passer skill set. It was an interesting approach to take both in the same draft, and that's a strategy that has worked before in various ways (Robert Griffin, Kirk Cousins anyone?). We think Joe Flacco begins the season as the starter, but there's a good chance that both Gabriel and Sanders see the field in 2025. This quarterback situation is a bit of a mess, so keep that in mind when considering all Browns skill position players for your fantasy team. |
Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Ford will be a 'nice complement' to RB Quinshon Judkins and RB Dylan Sampson, according to Dan Labbe of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Footballguys view: Ford took a pay cut to $1.75 million, about half of what he was originally due on the last year of his rookie contract after a performance-based escalator kicked in. That lower number is fully guaranteed, so Ford is very likely to make the team and have a change of pace and passing down role. He probably won't matter to us in redraft leagues unless Judkins goes down. |
Cleveland Browns RB Dylan Sampson worked as both a running back and a receiver during minicamp, according to running backs coach Duce Staley. 'Dylan is able to go play in the slot and also he's able to go and play on third down and maybe sprinkle in a little second down,' Staley said.
Footballguys view: The Browns have Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong returning from last year's team, but Sampson could have more to offer the offense if he shows he is ready for passing down responsibilities. He's a true change of pace from the presumed starter Quinshon Judkins, who was taken with the 36th pick in April. Sampson probably doesn't have much value in redraft leagues this year, but if he can get on the field ahead of Ford and Strong, it will be a great sign for his lasting value in dynasty leagues. |
Cleveland Browns DE Ogbo Okoronkwo was released Thursday, June 26.

Cleveland Browns QB Joe Flacco is the 'best pure thrower' among the team's four quarterbacks, in the opinion of The Athletic's Zac Jackson, who adds that the veteran's 'steadiness and experience' have made him a 'valuable addition.' Flacco has 'the respect of the locker room,' per Jackson, who writes that re-signing Flacco was a smart move no matter how many games he starts for the team in 2025.
Footballguys view: Flacco has looked good over the last two years, with both the Colts and Browns. He's developed a tendency to be more of a gunslinger than he was in his younger days, raising the fantasy values of everyone around him. He's the complete opposite of Kenny Pickett, who can be careful to a fault. The outlooks for most of the pass catchers in Cleveland will be heavily skewed by who is playing quarterback, with Flacco likely being the most favorable option. |
Joe Flacco player page
Cleveland Browns WR Diontae Johnson said he believes that QB Kenny Pickett is the leading candidate for the starting quarterback job this season.
Footballguys view: It's hard to draw too much from a comment coming from a wide receiver who just joined the team this offseason. But given Joe Flacco's age and the lack of investment in the two rookies, Pickett leading the battle makes some sense. Pickett's biggest fault so far through his NFL career has been playing too safe. If he wins the job, expectations for the pass catchers will all be tempered. |
Cleveland Browns Tre' McKitty was waived on Thursday, June 19. Free-agent TE Sal Cannella (UFL) was signed to an undisclosed contract to replace him on the roster.
Footballguys view: You're seeing a few UFL players signed this week. With the Arlington Renegades, Canella caught 44 passes for 474 yards with a touchdown this season (he was selected as All-UFL). Cannella was undrafted out of Auburn in 2020, and he's had a few chances in the NFL with teams like the Dolphins, Packers, Seahawks, and Buccaneers. Now, the former UFL receiving touchdown leader (2024) will try to latch on with the Browns. |

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders' citation for driving 101 miles per hour in a 60 mile-per-hour speed limit zone on June 17 was his second such violation in two weeks and occurred one day after he was scheduled to appear in court for a speeding ticket he received on June 6.
Footballguys view: The Browns need a quarterback who can handle himself on and off the field. Sanders missing court for a previous speeding ticket is not a great look as he competes for the starting job with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. We'll see if Sanders can take care of his speeding tickets and win this job at some point. Some reporters around the team do not believe it's possible for Sanders to win the job Week 1. |
Cleveland Browns WR Diontae Johnson is the 'clear favorite' to be the starting slot receiver, according to Zac Jackson of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: We'd feel better about updates with the Browns if we knew who the quarterback was going to be. Johnson has talent and experience, but four teams have given up on him so far (all four in 2024), and he needs to stay healthy and impress with his newest team. He will compete with second-year WR Jamari Thrash for the slot receiver duties with the Browns in 2025. |

Cleveland Browns WR Ja'Seem Reed (undisclosed) was waived from the Reserve/Injured list on Tuesday, June 17.
Link to storyCleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry said that the organization is 'absolutely, absolutely, absolutely' open to keeping all four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster (Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders) if each of them plays well enough.
Footballguys view: It's very difficult to project the Browns pass offense this year. Flacco is the favorite to open the season as the starter, and he would be good for Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, David Njoku, and really the whole offense. If the team is out of contention or Flacco plays the way he did at times in Indianapolis last year, the Browns could look to a rookie or Pickett. If that rookie is Shedeur Sanders, the passing game could be ok, but the team preferred Gabriel in the draft. Good luck predicting how this will go. |
Joe Flacco player page
Cleveland Browns WR Cedric Tillman is a 'locked-in starter' when healthy, according to Zac Jackson of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: We'll see who wins the Browns quarterback job before we get too excited about pass catchers not named Jerry Jeudy or David Njoku. Tillman has Diontae Johnson as his primary competition for the no.2 receiver job. If/when Tillman wins that job (and if the quarterback thing is somewhat stable), there will be some flex appeal with him for Fantasy GMs in deeper leagues. |
Cleveland Browns QBs Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders each received plenty of touches during the team's recent minicamp and all performed well in various situations, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.
Footballguys view: Ah yes, the cluster you-know-what continues in Cleveland at the quarterback position. They all have different skill sets, but we think this competition could come down to Flacco versus Sanders. Flacco has the experience, but Sanders might be the best pure passer of the bunch. Forget that Sanders was a fifth-round pick, as the talent is there for him to at least get a chance as a starter in the NFL. The Browns might decide to give Sanders the job if he continues to impress in training camp and the preseason. However, they could always roll with one of the other three because, ya know, Cleveland. |

Cleveland Browns TE Harold Fannin Jr. has stood out during OTAs, according to tight ends coach Christian Z. Jones. 'The guy catches everything, tracks the ball well and really adjusts to the ball in the air,' Jones said.
Footballguys view: Fannin could be on the field a lot this year, along with stalwart David Njoku, limiting the number of three wide receiver sets - which is the main way Diontae Johnson can get on the field. The passing game could have a pulse if Joe Flacco starts, but don't expect him to remain the starter all year as the Browns will want to see what they have in draft picks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. While Fannin is worth stashing in dynasty leagues, it's difficult to see him mattering in redraft leagues. |
Cleveland Browns WR Cedric Tillman (undisclosed) and WR Michael Woods II (undisclosed) participated in practice Thursday, June 12, after working on the side during the first two practices of the mandatory minicamp.
Link to storyCleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders took a series of snaps with the second-team offense during 11-on-11 drills this week and continued a strong spring. He threw a short touchdown in red-zone drills. On the play, he manipulated multiple linebackers by moving his eyes to his left before returning to his right and finding an open window to drive a pass to TE Brenden Bates in the end zone.
Footballguys view: We're trying to not get too excited about minicamp work, but it's exciting to think of what Sanders can do at the pro level. Sanders was a fifth-round pick, but it's not outlandish to think he's the best quarterback on the Browns roster. He's got a lot to prove, and Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel are there to compete for the starting job. It's a bit of a mess (understatement of the year), but Sanders is shining with his opportunities. Stay tuned. |
Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett are competing with rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders for the starting job with the Browns, and the first day of mandatory minicamp saw the youngest players get the most work. After the session was over, head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters at a press conference that was part of a plan to the fullest possible evaluation of all the players. "We try to be intentional about everything," Stefanski said. "Certainly, Joe had fewer reps today. That's obviously on purpose. Just trying to get as much evaluation on the guys as we can."
Footballguys view: Practice reps in quarterback competitions are always closely monitored and the most watched one this year may be in Cleveland. That being the case, it's easy to read too much into the day-by-day workloads. The good news? As PFT suggests, the Browns aren't going to be making any Week 1 decisions in the immediate future, so there will be a lot more counting of reps to come before September gets here. We'll be following along. |

Cleveland Browns WR David Bell (hip) has not been participating in practice this offseason because he is still recovering from the hip injury he suffered during the 2024 season.
Link to storyCleveland Browns WR Cedric Tillman (undisclosed) and WR Michael Woods II (undisclosed) worked on the side during practice Wednesday, June 4, because they are dealing with injuries.
Link to storyCleveland Browns QBs Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are all believed to be candidates for the starting quarterback job, and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said he could see any of the four to win the job at this point.
Footballguys view: It seems like every day we get quarterback updates from OTAs. This is a competition that should last through all of training camp and the preseason. Flacco has the experience and could be considered a front-runner for the job, but Sanders might be the best of the bunch. |

Cleveland Browns third-round draft choice QB Dillon Gabriel signed a four-year contract with the Browns Wednesday, June 4. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Link to storyFree-agent WR Jaelen Gill (Browns) signed with the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, June 4. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyCleveland Browns QB Kenny Pickett received the first snaps with the starting offense during team drills Wednesday, June 4.
Footballguys view: The Browns brought back 2023 hero Joe Flacco and drafted two young quarterbacks, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. However, Pickett was the first man up as the team took the field. Still, as USA Today suggests, it's far too early to give any of this credence. Training camp does not even start for another month and a half. That said, the Athletic's Zac Jackson recently advised readers there's "almost no scenario" in which either rookie would win the starting job in the offseason. The early expectation is Joe Flacco will open the season as the starter. |
Free-agent RB Jordan Mims (Saints) worked out for the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, June 4, according to a source.

Cleveland Browns third-round draft choice QB Dillon Gabriel 'does not look like an NFL quarterback,' according to The Athletic's Zac Jackson.'Dillon Gabriel does not look like an NFL quarterback to me. Like zero percent. ... I just don't think any other team was taking him in the top-100 or even the top-150. If I am wrong and the Cleveland Browns have their quarterback, that would be great. One of these years, I would love to cover a normal franchise and a rookie quarterback that sticks around for more than 6-to-18 months. But if it's Dillon Gabriel, I will be beyond shocked,' Jackson told Zach Gelb of the Infinity Sports Network.
Footballguys view: As Footballguy Alfredo Brown wrote in the Footballguys Rookie Draft Guide 3.0, "Gabriel landing at the tail end of Day 2 was one of the biggest surprises of the draft." Brown added it's even more shocking considering the selection of Shedeur Sanders less than 50 picks later. At this point, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett are the early favorites to win the Week 1 starting job. |
Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Ford was the first running back on the field during drills Wednesday, May 28.
Footballguys view: Ford is the veteran of the group, but rookie second-round pick Quinshon Judkins should emerge as the lead back for the Browns this year. In early May, Ford reworked his contract and likely has a spot locked up on the 53-man roster. Judkins has plenty of power and speed to his game, but Ford provides a nice change-of-pace option. We'll see how the room shapes up in training camp. |
Cleveland Browns DE Alex Wright (undisclosed) and S Ronnie Hickman (undisclosed) worked on the side during practice Wednesday, May 28.
Link to storyUpdating previous reports, Cleveland Brown rookie QBs Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are battling for the reserve pecking order spots, according to The Athletic's Zac Jackson, who added there's 'almost no scenario' in which either would win the starting job in the offseason. As previous reported, QB Joe Flacco is expected to open the season as the starter.
Footballguys view: The Browns quarterback situation is a mess right now...and likely for the whole 2025 season. Joe Flacco is there as the likely starter Week 1, but the former elite veteran is not the player he used to be and has a limited ceiling. Kenny Pickett, a former first-round pick, wants to prove himself now on his third team in three years. Gabriel is small and lacks tools as a passer, and Sanders has the tools but is a late-round pick who won't have many opportunities early on in this competition. Sanders may be the best quarterback on the roster, but there's a chance he doesn't make the 53-man roster...unless the Browns carry four quarterbacks...and -oh yeah- Deshaun Watson. |
Cleveland Browns first-round draft choice DT Mason Graham (Michigan) reportedly agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth $40.874 million on Tuesday, May 27. The deal also includes a fifth-year team option.
Link to storyCleveland Browns TE Harold Fannin Jr.'s ability to run after the catch is what makes his special, and the Browns offense desperately needs, in the opinion of Cleveland.com's Lance Reisland.
Footballguys view: That said, Fannin has limitations. As Reisland explained, playing as a traditional tight end with his hand on the ground and consistently blocking massive NFL defensive linemen will be a limiting factor. Using Fannin in various spots within different formations will maximize his strengths of receiving and blocking in space. This will mean using him as the second tight end along with David Njoku in two-TE sets. The Browns' current lack of depth at receiver could work in Fannin's favor, but fantasy investors should keep expectations in check. He's TE39 on our redraft projections. |
Cleveland Browns QBs Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders will not each get 25% of the reps during offseason work or training camp, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski.'The big thing for us is making sure that we give the guys enough reps that they need. ... It is not going to be everybody getting 25% of these reps. That is not how it is going to be. We want to give everybody enough reps where we can learn more about them and prepare them to get ready to play,' Stefanski told ESPN Cleveland.
Footballguys view: Flacco is likely to (now) get the most starter's reps. Pickett could get some more work with rookies Gabriel and Sanders getting clean up duty. Any of these four could start for the team at some point this year, perhaps even all are in play for the Week 1 job. It's a bit of a mess, and if you're a guy like Sanders there is little room for error since the reps merely won't be there to start. |

Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson (Achilles) is out of a walking boot and throwing to WRs Jerry Jeudy and David Bell at the team's facility.
Footballguys view: While the world focuses on the four-way quarterback competition in Cleveland, Watson continues to make excellent progress in his comeback bid after suffering a pair of Achilles injuries. News of the second tear was expected to sideline Watson for most or all of the 2025 season, and the Browns responded by trading for a passer (Kenny Pickett), signing another (Joe Flacco), and then drafting two more (Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders). Watson is not part of the derby among Pickett, Gabriel, Flacco, and Sanders. As Profootballrumors.com suggests, Watson will likely begin the season on the Browns' reserve/PUP list, but if he receives clearance during the season, seeing how the team handles it will become a front-burner matter. |
Deshaun Watson player page
Cleveland Browns RB Dylan Sampson does not have a clear role heading into 2025, in the opinion of The Athletic's Zac Jackson, who writes that he could 'potentially' win a job as the team's third-down back.
Footballguys view: As noted in the Footballguys Rookie Draft Guide Version 3.0, Sampson is undersized at 5-11 and 201 pounds. Even though he excelled in the open field, he was rarely deployed as a receiver, raising questions about his abilities there. Still, given his limitations, Sampson playing a complementary role rather than the three-down back workload he handled in college makes sense. |
Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Ford is not a lock to make the 53-man roster, in the opinion of The Athletic's Zac Jackson, who writes that 'Ford could go from atop the depth chart to a potential trade candidate' depending on how quickly rookie RBs Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson develop. Ford is in the final year of his rookie contract and took a pay cut this offseason.
Footballguys view: Ford played sparingly as a rookie in 2022 but alternated between the feature back and a third-down role over the past two seasons. While the decision to reduce his 2025 salary at least temporarily ensured his roster spot with the Browns, the additions of rookies Quinshon Judkins in the second round of April's NFL Draft and Dylan Sampson in the fourth round make the longer-term outlook less sure. |
Cleveland Browns RB Quinshon Judkins will 'almost certainly' be the team's 'feature runner' during his rookie season, in the opinion of The Athletic's Zac Jackson, who notes the team is not expected to bring back RB Nick Chubb while RB Jerome Ford took a pay cut to remain. Jackson adds that Judkins could open the season as the main short-yardage back before becoming the primary runner at 'some point' in 2025.
Footballguys view: As expected, Judkins was first in every line as the Browns' rookies went through the practice reps earlier this month, and fourth-round running back Dylan Sampson was close behind. Judkins should dominate the early-down carries for a Browns offense that will look to establish a strong rushing attack as they try to sort out their convoluted future at quarterback. Judkins' initial Footballguys projection calls for an RB25 finish with 210 carries and over 900 yards rushing. Expect him to be a factor at the goal line as well. |
Cleveland Browns QBs Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are all possible candidates for the starting quarterback job this upcoming season, and the Browns want to have a fair and efficient competition for the job, according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot.
Footballguys view: As previously noted, Cabot has characterized Pickett as her favorite to win the job. But it won't be handed to him. The plan will involve effectively splitting the offense into two during organized team activities, mandatory minicamp, and possibly training camp, with two quarterbacks with each unit. The Browns will likely try to pair up one veteran and one rookie, so in a typical practice, Pickett and Gabriel might be alternating throwing to one group of receivers while Flacco and Sanders alternate throwing to another group of receivers. The Browns currently have 12 wide receivers and five tight ends on the 90-player roster and want to ensure pass catchers are available to let all four quarterbacks get plenty of reps in offseason work. Stay tuned. |

Cleveland Browns fifth-round draft choice Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) signed a four-year contract with a reported $4.6 million on Monday, May 19.
Footballguys view: The Browns are reportedly planning to have a unique quarterback competition, with Sanders, third-round pick Dillon Gabriel, Kenny Pickett, and Joe Flacco all having a chance to earn the club's starting role. One local observer, Cleveland Plain Dealer staffer Mary Kay Cabot, expects Pickett to win the job. Others see Flacco as the likely starter. Either way, the veterans seem to hold the early lead. |
Cleveland Browns OT Dawand Jones (leg) has been participating in offseason workouts.
Link to storyCleveland Browns DT Michael Hall Jr. (knee) is making progress in his recovery from knee surgery but is not expected to participate in offseason workouts. The team hopes he will be ready to practice when training camp begins.
Link to storyMatt Connolly, from PennLive.com, reports Cleveland Browns HC Kevin Stefanski said rookie QB Shedeur Sanders is "willing to put in the work" this offseason.
Footballguys view: Sanders' work ethic has never been in question...or at least it should not have been part of the conversation before the draft. He's an incredibly accurate passer with pro level pass placement right now. Sanders holds onto the ball a bit too long, and he needs to get it out of his hands faster to avoid the rush. We'll see how Sanders stacks up in training camp battling with guys like Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. |

Cleveland Browns third-round pick TE Harold Fannin Jr. signed his four-year, $6.7 million deal Friday, May 16. Fannin set FBS single-season records for receptions (117) and receiving yards (1,555) by a TE at Bowling Green last season.
Footballguys view: Fannin was a great player in college at Bowling Green, and he showed flashes against great college competition at the Senior Bowl. David Njoku is entrenched as the starter for the 2025 season, but Fannin could be an eventual starter - and star - for the Browns. We like the way he uses his body to box out smaller defenders, and he can turn to run quickly after the catch. |
Cleveland Browns WR Ja'Seem Reed (undisclosed) moved to the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, May 14, after clearing waivers.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent WR Luke Floriea (Kent State), WR Kisean Johnson (Western Kentucky) and WR Cade McDonald (Miami (Ohio)) signed with the Cleveland Browns Monday, May 12. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also waived FB Eli Wilson, DE Marcus Haynes and S Trey Dean as well as waived/injured WR Ja'Seem Reed (undisclosed).
Link to storyCleveland Browns LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (neck) will be placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list on Monday, May 12, and will remain there throughout the completion of the 2025 season.
Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Notre Dame in the 2021 draft, Owusu-Koramoah was named to his first Pro Bowl after recording a career-high 101 tackles in the 2023 season. The Browns signed him to a three-year extension worth up to $39 million last August. Last month, the Browns drafted former UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger with the 33rd pick. This offseason, Cleveland re-signed linebacker Devin Bush to a one-year deal and signed veteran linebacker Jerome Baker to a one-year contract. |

Free-agent S Damontae Kazee (Steelers) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Cleveland Browns Monday, May 12.
Footballguys view: Kazee had 14 starts over the last three years with the Steelers. He can get his hands on the ball, either interceptions or pass breakups, but Kazee is likely competing for a reserve spot only with the Browns. |
Damontae Kazee player page
Cleveland Browns QB Dillon Gabriel said he loves that the Browns selected QB Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft because they can learn from each other.
Footballguys view: What else is he supposed to say? The Browns have an unsettled quarterback situation, with Gabriel, Sanders, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett all set to establish a pecking order. The Sanders pick was much later than expected, and he may not get much of a chance to impress when all four quarterbacks are at minicamp later this spring. One or both of the rookies may be bound for third-string duties or a practice squad spot. |
Cleveland Browns second-round draft choice LB Carson Schwesinger and fourth-round draft choice Dylan Sampson signed four-year contracts with the Browns Friday, May 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Both players will be expected to contribute early. Schwesinger could push to start in a linebacking corps that will likely be without Pro Bowler Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah for a still-unknown amount of time. Sampson was the second running back the Browns picked, the first being Quinshon Judkins in Round 2. Sampson may have been selected higher in another class, but the 2025 running back prospect class was deep, so he fell into the fourth round. Sampson will have to battle Jerome Ford for reps behind Judkins this season. |
Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns WR Diontae Johnson's one-year deal is for the veteran's minimum of $1.17 million and includes no guaranteed money.
Footballguys view: The Browns could cut Johnson at any point before the first week of the regular season and avoid being on the hook for any of that salary. Remember, Johnson was traded by the Steelers to the Panthers ahead of the 2024 season and played seven games for Carolina before being dealt to the Ravens. He was waived in December after refusing to enter a game and was claimed by the Texans. Houston cut him during the playoffs, and the Ravens claimed him in order to position themselves for a potential compensatory pick. They won't be getting that pick, and Johnson has work to do before he can be viewed as fantasy-relevant again. |

Free-agent WR Diontae Johnson (Ravens) officially signed an undisclosed contract with the Cleveland Browns on Monday, May 5.
Footballguys view: After playing for three different teams last year, Johnson hopes to find a role in a Cleveland receiving corps led by Jerry Jeudy and featuring DeAndre Carter, Cedric Tillman, Michael Woods II, Jamari Thrash, David Bell, and Kaden Davis. The Browns also have to figure out their starting QB, so any help they get on the outside is a plus. |
