Vikings | Coaching staff pushing J.J. McCarthy Wed Jun 25, 12:45 AM
Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy was given 'lengthy call sheets before practices' and 'was responsible for calls at the line of scrimmage' during offseason activities, according to The Athletic's Alec Lewis, who writes that McCarthy threw the ball with accuracy and that his arm strength 'stood out.' Lewis adds that the coaching staff hope that making things more difficult during the offseason program will 'supercharge' McCarthy's growth in 2025.
Footballguys view: McCarthy's arm talent and athleticism were obvious in college. But his success likely hinges on his ability to understand Kevin O'Connell's complex system. The Vikings' staff is testing his cerebral skills early. And they felt comfortable enough to head into the season with him atop the depth chart. McCarthy is young, mobile, and surrounded by an elite supporting cast of pass catchers. While there's obvious risk in drafting a player who has never taken an NFL snap, McCarthy has an easy path to outperforming his QB19 ADP. |
Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Wesley Phillips reportedly signed a one-year contract extension recently to keep him tied to the franchise through the end of the 2026 season. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Footballguys view: As the Star-Tribune notes, the deal with Phillips extends the tenure of one of Kevin O'Connell's key confidants, who helps organize the team's game plan during the week and provides a crucial voice for the coach as he calls plays on Sundays. Phillips turned down a job calling plays for the Chargers after the 2022 season, deciding to stay in Minnesota on O'Connell's staff; he will work with the head coach and the Vikings' offensive staff in 2025 as the team prepares 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy to take over as starting quarterback. |
Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy's arm has looked especially lively on throws down the middle of the field. 'He definitely has an arm,' receiver Justin Jefferson said. 'That's for sure. He can definitely zip it whenever he needs to.' Jefferson noted that McCarthy threw the ball the same way, hard and straight, last year. McCarthy said he was experimenting with his throws 'every single day' this spring and added: 'I believe I've grown the most on just the different level of trajectories of throw. At Michigan, I was kind of a one-speed pitch kind of guy. I had a couple deeper balls with level-three throws and stuff like that, but [I'm] just working on that two-ball and different paces to the 'pitches' and ball location.'
Footballguys view: In addition to being able to make all throws, McCarthy has a strong supporting cast of skill players, including Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Aaron Jones. Throw in an aggressive play-caller in head coach Kevin O'Connell, and there's a lot for fantasy investors to like here -- including a QB20 average draft position. The 12th-round price tag is especially appealing given McCarthy's QB12 Footballguys Projection. |
Minnesota Vikings WR Jordan Addison appeared to have a good connection with QB J.J. McCarthy during the mandatory minicamp last week. McCarthy said he plans to work out with Addison leading up to training camp.
Footballguys view: Addison has proven his rookie season was not a fluke and that the production could be replicated, even without Kirk Cousins. Of course, as previously noted, Addison faces a July 15 trial on a DUI charge. A guilty verdict -- or an admission of guilt by way of a plea agreement -- will likely lead to league punishment. The Vikings are expecting a three-game suspension, which might suppress Addison's draft value to a point where the discount becomes appealing. We'll be watching for more on that in coming weeks. |

Minnesota Vikings WR Jordan Addison reportedly attended a hearing in a California court on Monday, June 16, in connection to his DUI citation in 2024. Addison, who pleaded not guilty in December, is now scheduled to appear in court again on July 15.
Footballguys view: As Athlon Sports noted, the 23-year-old receiver is facing DUI charges for an incident where he was found asleep behind the wheel of a Rolls Royce in Los Angeles last summer. Addison pleaded not guilty in December. There has been continued speculation about when and if Addison might face a suspension from the NFL, which is awaiting the ruling of his trial. If the July 15 date is a jury trial, that would speed up resolution. We'll be watching for more, but the buzz around the league has suggested a three-game suspension would be likely if Addison is found guilty. |

Minnesota Vikings WR Jalen Nailor is still moving well on the field despite adding some weight this offseason, and offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said he expects big things from Nailor in 2025 after having a productive 2024.
Footballguys view: He's looking to do more after catching 28 passes for 414 yards and six touchdowns during the 2024 regular season. Nailor is the Vikings no.3 receiver behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. The Vikings added Tai Felton in the third round to compete in the room with guys like Nailor. Addison has a jury trial scheduled for June 16 in California in connection to his DUI citation in July of 2024. If he's suspended by the league for a few games, Nailor will be tasked with doing more. |
Free-agent TE Giovanni Ricci (Patriots) signed with the Minnesota Vikings Tuesday, June 10. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Western Michigan in 2020, Ricci has bounced around to four teams during that time. He's a converted wide receiver who is running out of time to prove himself at the pro level. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (knee) told reporters on Thursday, June 12, that he received full clearance to practice on his surgically repaired knee from the team's medical staff right before the start of training camp. McCarthy also added that his knee feels 'stronger than ever.'
Footballguys view: This will be one of the most important storylines to watch in camp and the preseason. McCarthy and the Vikings offense has a wide range of outcomes, hinging on how ready the second year player is ready to pilot the offense after missing almost all of 2024. He was reportedly on the verge of pushing Sam Darnold to start as a rookie before suffering the season-ending knee injury, so we should expect the more optimistic side of the outlook, but we'll be watching the reports out of camp closely. |
Minnesota Vikings TE Josh Oliver agreed to terms on a three-year, $23.25 million contract extension Tuesday, June 10, according to a source. The maximum value is $27.5 million, and Oliver will receive $19.9 million in guaranteed money.
Footballguys view: Profootballtalk.com notes that Oliver was heading into the third and final year of the three-year, $21 million contract he signed with the Vikings in 2023. He was originally a third-round pick of the Jaguars in 2019 and was traded to the Ravens in 2021 before signing with the Vikings in 2023. Last season, Oliver played in 15 games with 12 starts on offense and also played 30 percent of the Vikings' special teams snaps. |

Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson has participated in voluntary workouts this offseason because he is working on building chemistry with QB J.J. McCarthy.
Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert noted, it's easy to understand why Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell lobbied Jefferson to attend the voluntary workouts that he skipped in recent years. Early June is a better time to work through the twists of a quarterback-receiver relationship than July, August, or beyond -- especially when one of them has as many unique traits as Jefferson. Despite playing with five different starting quarterbacks, Jefferson still ranked atop the NFL with an average of 96.6 yards per game. But time on task matters, and it's great to see Jefferson getting in the work with McCarthy. |

Minnesota Vikings RB Jordan Mason (ankle) participated in drills during OTAs Wednesday, June 4.
Footballguys view: Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell said Mason will complement starting RB Aaron Jones as a "1b" in the backfield. Mason has talent, but his 2024 season with the 49ers was cut short because of this ankle problem. It's a good sign Mason is out there in OTAs, and we're excited about his upside as an RB3/flex option in 2025. |
Minnesota Vikings RB Jordan Mason finished third in the NFL behind only Baltimore Ravens RB Derrick Henry and Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley in a Next Gen Stats metric designed to 'assess the degree to which running backs generate more yards than expected,' per The Athletic's Alec Lewis.
Footballguys view: The Vikings traded for Mason, who ran for 100 yards on 20 carries against them in Minnesota last season, in March. They made the deal a week after signing Aaron Jones to a lucrative, two-year $20 million extension with $13 million guaranteed. While it's safe to assume the Vikings still see Jones as their lead back after a strong 2024 season, fantasy drafters in early best balls don't see much of a gap between the two. Jones is being drafted as RB28 in Round 7; Mason is going as RB32 in Round 9. |
The Minnesota Vikings promoted Ryan Grigson and Demitrius Washington to assistant general manager roles Friday, May 30, according to multiple sources.
Footballguys view: Grigson was getting some interest as a potential GM candidate for the Jets earlier this year. He was previously a GM for the Colts (2012-2016), where he oversaw three 11-win seasons in his five-year tenure. If things continue to go well in Minnesota, some franchise may want Grigson to run their team. |
Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to a multiyear extension Friday, May 30. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Footballguys view: Earlier this year, the Vikings locked up HC Kevin O'Connell with a five-year contract. O'Connell and Adofo-Mensah came to the Vikings together back in 2022, and they're keeping this duo for the foreseeable future. Adofo-Mensah's drafts leave something to be desired, but he's worked hard to find free agent gems for the team over the last few years. Ryan Grigson and Demitrius Washington were given the new titles of assistant general manager. |
Minnesota Vikings OG Will Fries (leg) likely will be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.

Link to storyMinnesota Vikings QB Max Brosmer, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota, could be viewed in a 'long-term role as a backup,' in the opinion of ESPN's Kevin Seifert, who notes the team gave him $246,000 in guaranteed money. Seifert also adds that Brosmer's 'initial impression' during the team's rookie minicamp 'merit a close eye' in the months ahead as he competes with QBs Sam Howell and Brett Rypien behind new starting QB J.J. McCarthy.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings WR Jordan Addison has a jury trial scheduled for June 16 in California in connection to his DUI citation in July of 2024, according to ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert. Per Seifert via online records, Addison participated in a pretrial conference hearing on Monday, May 12.
Footballguys view: Footballguys legal analyst Drew Davenport says this update doesn't necessarily add clarity. It specifies a date for the next hearing, but the type of hearing it is remains vague. Davenport believes we could be heading for another scheduling date, not the actual trial date. He explained, "The major takeaway is that if this thing is actually going to trial (I'm not sure that it is yet) we could be talking about a date that stretches into the season. That would affect the timing of any suspension and could ultimately also lead to it being pushed into the offseason again." So even though the concern for fantasy investors is the possibility Addison misses games this year, Davenport notes, "This case is moving, but we don't exactly know where yet. Settlement is still possible." Stay tuned. We'll continue watching for more. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy told reporters he is back up to 215 pounds after getting as low as 'the high 180s' during his recovery from last season's knee injury.
Footballguys view: It's now been over eight months since McCarthy, the tenth overall pick in last year's draft, suffered a torn meniscus that ended his rookie season before it could begin. Speaking to local reporters on Tuesday for the first time since before that injury, the 22-year-old said he's back to full strength and is excited about the opportunity this year. "Overall, I feel 110 percent because I feel better than when I got hurt eight months ago," he said. The question is, will McCarthy be ready to fuel the fantasy fortunes of teammates like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson? Head coach Kevin O'Connell is one reason for optimism. His offenses have been productive regardless of the quarterback since he arrived in Minnesota. And for the record, Jefferson's Average Draft Position in early best balls, he's going as WR2 with the fourth pick overall, is an indication that most drafters aren't worried. |
