Vikings | Blake Cashman returns to practice Mon Oct 13, 01:43 PM
Minnesota Vikings LB Blake Cashman (hamstring) had his 21-day practice window opened Monday, Oct. 13.
Footballguys view: The linebacker suffered a hamstring injury against the Bears in Minnesota's season opener. Cashman started 14 games last season and led the team in tackles with 112 (68 solo). He also totaled 4.5 sacks, 11 QB hits, eight tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, and eight passes defensed. Cashman typically quarterbacks Brian Flores' defense, wearing the "green dot" helmet. Eric Wilson has filled in admirably during Cashman's absence, having recorded 35 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles so far this season. The Vikings have three weeks to activate Cashman or he'll revert to season-ending IR. |

Minnesota Vikings QB Carson Wentz (shoulder) will practice this week. He's dealing with an injury to his left, non-throwing shoulder.
Footballguys view: The Vikings have not revealed specifics about Wentz's shoulder injury, with coach Kevin O'Connell saying on Oct. 6 that it "will be something that we'll be taking a look at throughout this week." That he'll practice is obviously a good sign, but the Vikings' quarterback situation is "murky" entering their Week 7 showdown against the struggling Eagles. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Sunday that J.J. McCarthy still isn't 100 percent healthy from the high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons. We'll be following up all week. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy's (ankle) status is up in the air for Week 7 as head coach Kevin O'Connell said he wasn't willing to project where McCarthy might be by the end of the week. McCarthy will do limited work in practice Monday, Oct. 13.
Footballguys view: McCarthy was initially expected to miss four weeks with the ankle injury he suffered in Week 2. But, as NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Sunday, McCarthy is still not 100 percent. Pelissero added that coaches need to see his mobility, how the ankle responds, and they've got to make sure McCarthy is comfortable and in a groove from an operational perspective before they put him back out on the field. So this week's practices will be important, especially with Carson Wentz working through a sore shoulder. Minnesota's first participation report of the week will be released on Wednesday. |
Free-agent TE Nick Vannett (Vikings) was signed to the Minnesota Vikings practice squad Thursday, Oct. 9.

Minnesota Vikings RB Cam Akers reverted back to the practice squad Monday, Oct. 6, after being on the active roster for the Week 5 game.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is expected to be at least a limited participant during practice next week, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: McCarthy has missed the last three games with an ankle injury. O'Connell said last week that there was hope he would practice, but that didn't happen. The team has a bye this week, so McCarthy will have some time to work his way back ahead of a Week 7 game against the Eagles. |

Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz injured his left shoulder before halftime in Sunday's win over the Browns in London and went to the locker room a little early to get it checked out. He returned for the second half and led a game-winning touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, but head coach Kevin O'Connell said at his press conference that Wentz is going for further consultations about the injury. "He's still getting further evaluation, but he's pretty sore in that left shoulder," O'Connell said.
Footballguys view: J.J. McCarthy has missed the last three games with an ankle injury. O'Connell said last week that there was hope he would practice, but that didn't happen. The team has a bye this week, so both players will have some time to work their way back ahead of a Week 7 game against the Eagles. |

Minnesota Vikings PK Will Reichard misfired on his only field-goal attempt in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, while knocking through his three point-after attempts.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings WR Myles Price was not targeted in the passing game in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London, but he racked up four kick returns for 102 yards and three punt return for 15 yards.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings LB Eric Wilson posted a team-high nine total stops with four solo tackles in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London. The 31-year-old veteran has 18 total stops, including nine solo tackles, in the past two games, and at least five total tackles in each of his five outings.

Minnesota Vikings TE Josh Oliver registered two receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns. He was targeted three times.

Minnesota Vikings WR Jalen Nailor posted three receptions for 27 yards on four targets in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London, and he also had a run for 15 yards.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson absorbed all six of his targets for 38 yards in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London.
Footballguys view: Hockenson has been a solid PPR TE1 since Carson Wentz took over, and he'll projected as one again in Week 7 against the bye, assuming JJ McCarthy (ankle) is not ready to play. After that is an open question, but you have to feel better about Hockenson than you did a few weeks ago. |

Minnesota Vikings WR Jordan Addison posted five receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown on six targets in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London.
Footballguys view: Addison also sat for the first quarter because of a coach's decision. He has been a good play in each of his first two games back, a testament his talent, but also what Carson Wentz did for the Vikings pass offense. Addison goes into the team's bye as a WR3/Flex play with value uncertainty ahead if JJ McCarthy takes back over at some point. |

Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson posted seven receptions for a game-high 123 yards on 11 targets in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London.
Footballguys view: Carson Wentz has had a rough time with pressure playing behind a decimated offensive line, but he has been able to fuel two strong games for Jefferson. It's fair to say that the longer Wentz starts, the better it will be for Jefferson's value. |

Minnesota Vikings RB Zavier Scott ran five times for 18 yards in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London, and he was not targeted in the receiving game.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings RB Jordan Mason runs 13 times for 52 yards and a touchdown in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London, and he added 4 yards on three receptions on four targets and he was credited with a lost fumble.
Footballguys view: Mason had a turbulent day. The Vikings used Zavier Scott more extensively in the first half after Mason fumbled, but Mason eventually scored the team's only rushing touchdown on the day. Mason left briefly with what looked like a leg injury in the second half, but came back in to finish the game after Scott fumbled. The Vikings have a bye, and Mason will start vs. Philadelphia in Week 7. Aaron Jones (hamstring) is eligible to be activated in Week 7, but it's not clear yet when that will happen. Until then, Mason will be the starter and a solid RB2 play. |
Minnesota Vikings QB Carson Wentz went 25-for-34 with 236 passing yards and one touchdown in Week 5's victory over the Cleveland Browns. He also had 13 rushing yards on three attempts.
Footballguys view: Wentz led two second half touchdown drives, including a surprisingly easy game-winning drive that was capped by a Jordan Addison touchdown catch with 25 seconds left. This after leaving the game with a shoulder injury in the first half that forced him to play with a harness on his shoulder for the rest of the game. The Vikings faced a tough defense and won despite missing three starting offensive lineman. Wentz will almost certainly start in Week 7 against Philadelphia after the bye, and he is making the decision of when to put JJ McCarthy back in more difficult. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is reportedly targeting a return to action for Week 7's game versus the Philadelphia Eagles, following the team's bye in Week 6. However, multiple sources believe that McCarthy could be sidelined beyond that point.
Footballguys view: Carson Wentz continues as the starter for the Vikings while McCarthy is out of action. The second-year quarterback has a lot to prove upon his return. Shaky play to begin this season is not what Vikings fans wanted, but we want to see if he can steadily improve with more starts. We'll see if McCarthy can be ready by Week 7....and then we'll see if he can start playing better. |
Minnesota Vikings QB Carson Wentz will make his third consecutive start in place of injured QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) for Week 5's game versus the Cleveland Browns.
Footballguys view: McCarthy may be back for Week 7, but this week it's Wentz again. Against the Browns in London, we're not expecting much from Wentz. He's a low-end QB2 for Fantasy GMs who are in start-2 QB or superflex leagues. |

Minnesota Vikings OG Donovan Jackson (wrist), C Ryan Kelly (concussion), C Michael Jurgens (hamstring), QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle), OT Brian O'Neill (knee) and LB Andrew Van Ginkel (neck) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 3, and have been ruled out for Week 5. TE Ben Yurosek (knee) was limited during practice and is listed as questionable. LB Tyler Batty (knee) and C.J. Ham (knee) fully participated in practice but are listed as questionable. S Harrison Smith (non-injury) was limited during practice but is not on the injury report. OT Christian Darrisaw (non-injury), RB Zavier Scott (knee) and DE Dallas Turner (illness) fully participated in practice and are not on the injury report.

Minnesota Vikings RB Zavier Scott (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 3, and is not on the injury report for Week 5.
Footballguys view: Scott was tending to a minor knee issue this week, but he'll be active in Sunday's game in London. Scott, a former wide receiver, has stepped into Aaron Jones' role nicely. He's been running routes downfield and showcased his pass-catching chops with a nifty toe-tap touchdown in the back of the end zone last week. He's got more appeal in PPR leagues than in standard ones. However, a tough matchup against a strong Cleveland run-stuffing unit puts a slight cap on his ceiling. |
Minnesota Vikings LB Andrew Van Ginkel (concussion) was ruled out for Week 5.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 5.
Footballguys view: With a bye coming after back-to-back international games, the Vikings will take a cautious approach with McCarthy's recovery. Wentz looked decent in Week 3 but unraveled in Week 4. Going up against a stout Cleveland pass rush, Wentz could have another tough go. However, staying in Europe after last week's game in Dublin could help alleviate some of the sluggishness we typically see in these international matchups. Wentz is a starter in two-quarterback and superflex leagues, but you can likely find better in fantasy leagues that only require one quarterback. Expect McCarthy to regain his role as the starter in Week 7. |
Minnesota Vikings OT Christian Darrisaw (rest), LB Dallas Turner (illness), G Donovan Jackson (wrist), C Michael Jurgens (hamstring), C Ryan Kelly (concussion), QB J.J. Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) could be spotted at practice this week as head coach Kevin O'Connell said the team is hopeful he resumes practicing.
Footballguys view: McCarthy has not practiced since a Week 2 loss to the Falcons. The Vikings have a bye in Week 6 after wrapping up their two-week trip to Ireland and England, so the Week 7 game will likely be the target for McCarthy to retake the offensive reins from Carson Wentz. A return to the practice field this week would be a good first step toward that outcome. |
Minnesota Vikings OT Brian O'Neill (knee) is considered week-to-week but will avoid the Reserve/Injured list with a sprained medial collateral ligament.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings OT Brian O'Neill (knee) suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament during the Week 4 game and could miss some time, according to sources.

Minnesota Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson caught four passes for 39 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4. He was targeted five times during the game.
Footballguys view: Hockenson had a good game agaisnt the woeful Bengals defense, but otherwise has been quiet for fantasy. His box score was padded by garbage time targets, so you shouldn't feel like you are going to miss out on much if you drop Hockenson, especially with Jordan Addison back to widen the target tree. The Vikings face a strong Browns defense next week and then have a bye. |
T.J. Hockenson player page
Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings OT Brian O'Neill (knee) will have an MRI on his knee Sunday night, head coach Kevin O'Connell said. The early indications are O'Neill suffered an injury to his medial collateral ligament.
Footballguys view: O'Neill is one of the Vikings best offensive linemen, and he will be missed for any time that he is out. Minnesota does have a bye in two weeks, so that eases the pain a little bit for an offense that just lost a starting guard last week on the occasion of getting their starting left tackle back. The Browns are up next week, and they should be able to exploit the Vikings injuries on the offensive line. |
Minnesota Vikings WR Jordan Addison caught four passes for 114 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4. He was targeted eight times during the game.
Footballguys view: Addison's 82 yard catch in the fourth quarter got the Vikings back in a game that they trailed by 18 points with 11:18 left. He has the Browns next week and then a bye, so it's still difficult to make the case for adding him in short bench leagues. |
Jordan Addison player page
Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson caught 10 passes for 126 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4. He was targeted 11 times during the game.
Footballguys view: The come from behind game script forced the Vikings to throw a lot, so we finally got a ceiling game from Jefferson in PPR leagues. Minnesota has a tougher matchup against the Browns next week, but at least Wentz is clearly an upgrade from the Vikings got from JJ McCarthy in the first two games. |
Justin Jefferson player page
Minnesota Vikings RB Zavier Scott caught six passes for 43 yards and one touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4. He also rushed for one yard on two carries during the game.
Footballguys view: Scott was on the field a lot when the Vikings were in garbage time catchup mode, which produced a viable PPR flex play if you were forced to plug him in due to injuries. Next week against the Browns, the Vikings might have to pass more, so Scott is on our waiver wire watch list in deep PPR leagues. |
Minnesota Vikings RB Jordan Mason rushed for 57 yards on 16 carries against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4. He also caught three passes for 15 yards during the game.
Footballguys view: Mason wasn't as effective facing a resurgent Steelers run defense as he was against the paper bag Bengals defense in Week 3. The Vikings also lost two starting offensive linemen. To add insult to injury, Zavier Scott got the garbage time touchdown with the Vikings offense in pass mode. Mason isn't a good start in Week 5 against the Browns. Mason will get at least one more start before Aaron Jones is eligible to return from injured reserve, but it will come after a Week 6 bye against the Eagles. |
Minnesota Vikings QB Carson Wentz went 30-for-46 for 350 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4. He was also sacked six times during the game.
Footballguys view: Wentz put up good numbers against a Steelers defense that is prone to lapses in the secondary, but he was under pressure all day as the Vikings lost two offensive linemen during the game. Wentz will face the Browns next week and then the Vikings have their bye, so he's not worth holding in 1QB leagues. |
