Steelers | Early exit for Pat Freiermuth on Tuesday    Tue Aug 3, 02:56 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth (shoulder) was unable to finish practice Tuesday, Aug. 3, and was later spotted icing his left shoulder.

Footballguys view: No idea of the severity just yet. Freiermuth has drawn a lot of "Baby Gronk" comparisons because of his size and strength combination, but we think he's actually more like former Steelers tight end Heath Miller. We'll see if the rookie from Penn State has to miss some time due to this shoulder injury.

Steelers | Eric Ebron unable to finish practice    Wed Jul 28, 08:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Eric Ebron (elbow) left practice early Wednesday, July 28, because of elbow discomfort.

Footballguys view: Ebron should get some rest with this elbow injury. There's no word about the severity yet, so no need to panic. However, the seasoned veteran might need to get a little time off or at least be limited to take care of this soreness.

  Steelers | J.C. Hassenauer day-to-day    Sun Jul 25, 01:41 PM

Steelers | Antoine Brooks injured    Sun Jul 25, 01:28 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers S Antoine Brooks (leg) left practice early Sunday, July 25, because of a lower leg injury, but head coach Mike Tomlin said Brooks will be fine.

Footballguys view: Brooks was actually one of the first in line to replace Mike Hilton at slot corner, so they need the 2020 sixth-round pick to get back on the field as soon as possible.

Steelers | Two centers injured    Sat Jul 24, 06:50 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C J.C. Hassenauer (undisclosed) and C B.J. Finney (undisclosed) left practice early Saturday, July 24, because of injuries, but neither injury is considered serious.

Footballguys view: Third-round pick Kendrick Green will get the first crack at starting, and if neither of the players he is competing with stay healthy in camp, he'll be the starter by default.

Steelers | Dwayne Haskins busy at practice    Fri Jul 23, 09:38 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins saw a lot of reps in practice Friday, July 23, and is expected to see a lot of work in the Hall of Fame Game, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Haskins could unseat Mason Rudolph as the backup quarterback and potential 2022 starter with a good camp and preseason. He had garnered some praise with his play this spring and could surprise with a fresh start.

Steelers | Kevin Dotson misses practice    Thu Jul 22, 07:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers OG Kevin Dotson (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Thursday, July 22, because of an undisclosed injury. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Dotson should return in a few days.

Footballguys view: Hopefully that's all it is, as Dotson was expected to be one of the only returning starters after getting four starts in as a rookie last year. The Steelers are going to have change all of the offensive line and need Dotson to take a step forward in year two.

Steelers | Vince Williams retires    Wed Jul 21, 06:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Vince Williams announced his retirement from professional football Wednesday, July 21.

Footballguys view: Robert Spillane is fully entrenched as the starter next to Devin Bush now. The team has little depth at inside linebacker and might have to turn to fourth round pick Buddy Johnson if Bush or Spillane go down. Williams was an extremely productive sixth round pick who spent all eight years of his career in Pittsburgh, admirably carrying on the tradition of hard-nosed Steelers linebackers.

Steelers | Devin Bush to be full participant    Wed Jul 21, 05:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Devin Bush (knee) is expected to be a full participant once practices begin, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Steelers defense slowed down from their torrid pace when Bush got hurt. Vince Williams retirement makes Bush's health even more important. We'll watch the reports out of camp and how the Steelers are handling to know just how strong we should project their defense this year.

Steelers | Kendrick Green finalizes rookie pact    Tue Jul 20, 09:11 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers third-round pick OL Kendrick Green signed a four-year contract Tuesday, July 20. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Green has a hardnosed mentality and the Steelers think he can be the center of the present and future. He'll be a key to solidifying a line that will feature at least 3-4 new starters.

Steelers | Chaz Green joins Steelers    Tue Jul 20, 09:15 AM

Free-agent OT Chaz Green (Colts) agreed to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, July 20. Financial terms weren't disclosed. OT Jarron Jones and LB Calvin Bundage were released.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have a lot of inexperience at tackle, so bringing Green in to compete for the swing tackle job isn't the worst idea. He was a third-round pick of the Cowboys in 2015, and has made spot starts for them, the Raiders, and the Colts (against the Steelers in Week 16 last year).

Steelers | Melvin Ingram added to pass rush    Mon Jul 19, 07:24 PM

Ian Rapoport, of NFL.com, reports that OLB/DE Melvin Ingram is signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers

Footballguys view: 2020 third round pick Alex Highsmith was good enough to give the Steelers a Plan A opposite T.J. Watt to replace Bud Dupree, but adding Ingram is lemonade from the unexpected release of David DeCastro. Trai Turner was much cheaper than DeCastro, which gave the Steelers cap room to bulk up their pass rush rotation on the outside. Hopefully Ingram can avoid nagging injuries and give the team the ability to keep Watt and Highsmith fresh without losing any edge on the outside rush.

Steelers | Pittsburgh pursued Justin Houston    Sun Jul 18, 05:22 PM

Free-agent LB Justin Houston (Colts) received interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the two sides are not expected to reach an agreement.

Footballguys view: Houston could be holding out for more money or playing time. A return to the Colts is still possible and a few teams might be waiting to see how their edge rush options look in camp before committing to Houston.

Steelers | Melvin Ingram to visit    Sun Jul 18, 05:21 PM

Free-agent LB Melvin Ingram (Chargers) is expected to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week.

Footballguys view: Ingram could be of help to both 3-4 and 4-3 teams. The Steelers are going to rely on 2020 third round pick Alex Highsmith, who was a breakout rookie last year, to replace Bud Dupree, but they have little depth at outside linebacker after him. Ingram could split the role with Highsmith and give the team insurance if Highsmith has a sophomore slump. The team does have some newfound cap room after they released David DeCastro last month.

Steelers | Benny Snell not a lock for roster?    Thu Jul 8, 10:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell's roster spot could be in jeopardy after the offseason additions of RB Najee Harris and RB Kalen Ballage, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Harris will be the starter and the lead back for the Steelers this year. Ballage has bounced around the league a bit but he has flashed a bit as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Add in change-of-pace back Anthony McFarland and you can see how things are cramped. Snell has a determined style with little flash to his game. He should make the 53-man roster, and you could make the argument that he's the best suited to be the primary backup to Harris in 2021. We'll see how this shakes out in training camp.

Steelers | Better 2021 for Diontae Johnson?    Sat Jul 3, 01:33 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson is among the players veteran NFL analyst Gil Brandt 'guarantees' will perform better in 2021.

Footballguys view: Johnson still hasn't played up to his potential in the pros. He led the league in drops last year and that's why Fantasy GMs are taking him as a low-end WR2/WR3 flex in drafts leading up to this season. The potential to do more is there with Johnson if he improves his concentration.

Steelers | PIT frees up nearly $6 million in cap space    Sun Jun 27, 08:36 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers' release of OG David DeCastro and free-agent signing of OG Trai Turner allowed the team to free up $5.75 million in cap space. DeCastro's release saved the Steelers $8.75 million on the salary cap, while Turner's one-year deal was worth $3 million.

Footballguys view: Perhaps if the Steelers had known that DeCastro wasn't going to be in their 2021 plans, they could still have Steven Nelson on the roster, and maybe they can still try to find a way to bring him back or otherwise use the extra cap room to address the hole left when they released a top performer at cornerback.

Steelers | Trai Turner contract terms    Fri Jun 25, 01:22 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers OG Trai Turner's new one-year contract is worth $3 million, it was reported Friday, June 25.

Footballguys view: That is extremely reasonable for a starter of Turner's caliber and a bad sign for what the remaining free agents on the market are going to get.

Steelers | Trai Turner agrees to terms    Thu Jun 24, 07:41 PM

Free-agent OG Trai Turner (Chargers) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, June 24. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Turner will immediately become the elder statesman of the offensive line starters and he will be an anchor for the running game, which is being rebuilt by new offensive coordinator Matt Canada. He'll also help new offensive line coach Adrian Klemm help instill physicality in a unit that became more finesse-based as last season unfolded.

Steelers | Pittsburgh talking with Trai Turner    Thu Jun 24, 04:38 PM

Steelers | David DeCastro cut    Thu Jun 24, 04:36 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers OG David DeCastro was released Thursday, June 24.

Footballguys view: DeCastro's future is in doubt as the team had no choice but to move on without one of their all-time greats at guard. Trai Turner has been signed to fill the gap and he should be an asset to the running game, but this offensive line has very little continuity from last year and the first month or so of the season could be bumpy for Ben Roethlisberger and the offense.

Steelers | Rookie RB Harris Set up to be a Star    Tue Jun 22, 01:51 PM

Ed Bouchette, from The Athletic, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have a new found commitment to the ground game in 2021. Rookie running back Najee Harris was selected in the first round and could have a large role from day one, setting him up to be a star in the NFL.

Footballguys view: We agree with Bouchette here, and he's one of the longest tenured Steelers beat reporters out there. He's a trusted source, and Bouchette's camp observations tell a story where Harris should be the centerpiece of the Steelers offense. He notes in this article that head coach Mike Tomlin prefers to go with one "bell cow" back and that's clearly Harris. He could outperform his current ADP of RB21 (4.01) in 12-team PPR leagues. In fact, considering him a borderline RB1 for Fantasy GMs this year is not out of the question.

Steelers | Pittsburgh meets with Trai Turner    Fri Jun 18, 05:25 PM

Free-agent OG Trai Turner (Chargers) met with the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, June 18, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Steelers problem on the offensive line is at tackle, not guard, so this is curious. Stud right guard David DeCastro hasn't practiced this offseason, so this touched off speculation that he's not right and the team might be looking for a replacement.

Steelers | Eric Ebron not at practice    Wed Jun 16, 05:52 PM

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger suffers apparent injury    Tue Jun 15, 07:02 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (undisclosed) needed to receive some attention from the trainers during practice Tuesday, June 15, but head coach Mike Tomlin indicated that it was nothing serious.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger is one tough cookie but at this age we'd like to hear about him getting through practice unscathed. Tomlin says it's nothing serious, so Roethlisberger should be out there ASAP as he prepares to make one more (final?) run in 2021.

Steelers | Malik Hooker visits Steelers    Fri Jun 4, 10:45 AM

Free-agent S Malik Hooker (Colts) visited the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, June 3.

Steelers | Dwayne Haskins receives praise    Tue Jun 1, 06:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins has looked great early in organized team activities, according to QB Ben Roethlisberger Tuesday, June 1. Roethlisberger said Haskins' throwing mechanics 'are some of the prettiest I've seen.'

Footballguys view: There was a lot to like about Haskins when he came out of Ohio State in 2019. He's got a rocket arm, and Haskins played with poise - attacking a defense deep and making high/low reads with ease. Things fell apart for him with Washington, and now he's getting a second chance with the Steelers. If he puts it all together, perhaps Haskins could be an option for the Steelers after Ben Roethlisberger is done. At this time, Pittsburgh seems to be counting on Mason Rudolph as a future starter and that's not a great plan. It's not like Haskins is a guarantee, but his upside is higher if he finally starts playing up to his potential.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger discusses elbow injury    Tue Jun 1, 01:21 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger disclosed to reporters Tuesday, June 1, that his offseason elbow procedure in 2020 was a 'total reconstruction' and that surgery might have had something to do with his inability to throw deep with any kind of consistency last season.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger reveals quite a bit in this report. A "total reconstruction" helps further explain why he didn't quite look like himself throwing downfield in 2020 after missing most of the 2019 season. The Steelers should be a more balanced offense (hello Najee Harris!) in 2021 and limit what Roethlisberger is asked to do as a passer in what could be his final pro season.

Steelers | Najee Harris draws praise from his QB    Tue Jun 1, 01:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick RB Najee Harris appears to be adapting quickly to the pro game so far, according to comments made by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Tuesday, June 1.'He doesn't seem lost. It's not too big for him. His head's not spinning. ... the most exciting part is once he gets it and it clicks and he goes full speed. It's going to be something to see,' Roethlisberger said.

Footballguys view: Harris can be a special player in this league. He's a big back but he can win with more than just power. Harris has some elusiveness to his game and is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. In addition to what he can do on the ground, Harris is a fine receiving option - either out of the backfield or lined up in the slot/out wide. Don't be surprised if he's the centerpiece of the Steelers offense in 2021. He could easily outperform his current ADP of RB30 (6.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Najee Harris gets rookie deal done    Tue May 25, 02:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick RB Najee Harris signed a four-year contract worth a fully guaranteed $13.1 million on Tuesday, May 25, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal includes a signing bonus of $6.85 million, per The Athletic's Mark Kaboly.

Footballguys view: Harris is there to be the lead back for the Steelers. With an aging Ben Roethlisberger the offense needs to run through Harris as much as possible. Harris is a three-down back who can thrive as a featured runner and is a natural receiver out of the backfield.

Steelers | Rookie Harris says Offense Resembles Alabama    Mon May 17, 02:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back Najee Harris says OC Matt Canada's offense is similar to what he worked in during his college days at Alabama. "The inside zones, the outside zones, the power plays, the one-back power, the duo plays, so a lot of what they are doing in their offense resembles a lot of what we did [at Alabama]," said Harris.

Footballguys view: The Steelers need to lean on their rushing attack more, and that's what they should do this season. Harris should work well in the Canada offense just like he shined in Alabama. He thrived as a runner with subtle "make you miss" ability and can be a fine receiving option out of the backfield. Harris has a current ADP of RB34 (7.08) in 12-team PPR leagues, but expect that to rise as the season gets closer and more people realize he's got RB1 potential in this offense.
