Bears | Artavis Pierce cleared to return    Sun Aug 2, 06:59 PM

Chicago Bears RB Artavis Pierce was activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, Aug. 2. The Bears also waived RB Napoleon Maxwell.

Footballguys view: Pierce is a speed back who can catch passes. They picked him up as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State this year and he's a long shot to make the final roster. Pierce could be bound for the practice squad if he impresses in practice.

Bears | Mitchell Trubisky believes he has improved    Fri Jul 31, 03:26 PM

Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky said he worked with a quarterbacks coach this offseason and worked on improving his footwork and mechanics.

Footballguys view: Trubisky needs to prove it on the field. While other first-round QBs from his class (Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes) are superstars in this league, Trubisky is looking more and more like a bust. The Bears have brought in competition this offseason as veteran Nick Foles will push Trubisky for the starting job. If he's improved, Trubisky needs to show it in practice and win the job outright. Then, he needs to play better in games...oh yeah, and win.

Bears | Eddie Goldman won't play    Tue Jul 28, 10:52 AM

Chicago Bears DT Eddie Goldman has decided to opt out of the 2020 season.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate Goldman has opted out over 'health concerns' so there is a possibility that he will get the 'high risk' stipend of $350,000. Goldman has had an up-and-down career for the Bears and now they'll be missing a player who can play around 500 snaps per year and stuff the run regularly.

Bears | Chicago's rookie class locked up    Tue Jul 21, 04:14 PM

Updating a previous story, Chicago Bears second-round pick TE Cole Kmet, seventh-round pick G Lachavious Simmons, fifth-round pick LB Trevis Gipson, fifth-round CB Kindle Vildor, fifth-round pick WR Darnell Mooney and seventh-round pick OL Arlington Hambright signed their four-year rookie contracts Tuesday, July 21. It was previously announced second-round pick CB Jaylon Johnson signed his rookie deal. Financial terms of the deals were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Kmet and Mooney are the players Fantasy GMs need to watch here. During his college career at Notre Dame, Kmet displayed a 'Y' skill set at the tight end position. He's a decent receiver with strong hands and concentration while also serving as a capable blocker. Mooney's game is all about speed, speed and more speed. His game at Tulane was all about tracking passes deep and that's his best attribute as a rookie in the pros.

Bears | Jaylon Johnson inks rookie pact    Tue Jul 21, 02:03 PM

Chicago Bears CB Jaylon Johnson signed his four-year rookie contract Tuesday, July 21. According to NFL slotting rules, as a second-round pick, Johnson will not have a team option for a fifth year, and his financial terms are based on his draft placement.

Footballguys view: Johnson has length and strength at the cornerback position. In three years (29 games starting), Johnson had seven interceptions and returned two of those for touchdowns (including a 100-yard pick six). He is incredibly aggressive in coverage and will not hesitate to get physical with opposing receivers.

Bears | Allen Robinson has not heard from team    Wed Jul 15, 07:51 PM

Chicago Bears WR Allen Robinson said he has not been contacted by the Bears this offseason about a possible contract extension.

Footballguys view: Robinson will play out the third year of his contract and be ready for a new deal at age 27. He could surpass his previous contract's 14 million per year terms by a few million or more if he performs as well as he did last year.

Bears | Three RBs may fight for one spot    Sat Jun 27, 03:39 PM

Chicago Bears RBs Napoleon Maxwell, Ryan Nall and Artavis Pierce may compete for one roster spot during training camp.

Footballguys view: The 'Wrecking Nall' has been with the team since he came into the league as a UDFA from Oregon State in 2018. He may be the favorite because of his experience but it's not much. Nall only played eight snaps last year over three games for the Bears. He's a big, power back who can grind down defenses. Compare this to Pierce, another Beavers UDFA (2020), who is a speed back who can catch passes. Maxwell is also more likely to be used as a receiver than Nall. This competition will work itself out in training camp.

Bears | Teammate expects Mitchell Trubisky to start    Wed Jun 24, 12:41 PM

Chicago Bears WR Ted Ginn Jr. said he expects QB Mitchell Trubisky to be the starting quarterback this season.

Footballguys view: That's a bold statement, especially considering Ginn was playing with the Saints last year. Trubisky is in a make-or-break year in 2020 and he'll have to beat out Nick Foles for the starting job in training camp. It's not an exciting competition for Bears fans or for Fantasy GMs.

Bears | David Montgomery eyes improvement    Sat Jun 20, 10:17 PM

Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery said he is better prepared to lead the backfield in 2020 and expects improvement in a running game that ranked 27th in the NFL in rushing yards, 28th in rushing touchdowns and 29th in yards per carry last year.

Footballguys view: Montgomery is about as cheap as any clear lead back in fantasy drafts, and there's hope that Nick Foles will improve the offense, but he's still going in a part of drafts that is fertile ground for upside wide receivers so taking him has some opportunity cost. The Bears don't have anyone else of consequence beyond Tarik Cohen at running back, so it's Montgomery or bust for them at running back this yaer.

Bears | Adam Shaheen expected to have role    Sat Jun 20, 07:20 PM

Chicago Bears TE Adam Shaheen is still part of the team's plans on offense this upcoming season, according to tight ends coach Clancy Barone.

Footballguys view: Shaheen hasn't been able to stay healthy or develop from his humble small school beginnings. The Bears have a glut of tight ends on the roster and invested a lot of resources in Jimmy Graham and Cole Kmet this year, but they are hoping this can be the year Shaheen finally generates some forward momentum.

Bears | Allen Robinson tops in drawing PI    Sat Jun 20, 01:02 PM

Chicago Bears WR Allen Robinson has drawn a league-high 14 pass-interference penalties in coverage since 2018, according to Pro Football Focus data.

Footballguys view: Too bad you don't get fantasy points for that. Robinson was able to turn in a WR1 season last year with Mitchell Trubisky tossing him the rock. We'll see if Nick Foles can beat out Trubisky for the starting job in training camp and how that would impact guys like Robinson. Due to his large role and natural talent, Fantasy GMs are wise to consider Robinson a low-end WR1 again in 2020.

Bears | Darnell Mooney praised as explosive    Fri Jun 19, 01:27 PM

Chicago Bears WR Darnell Mooney is drawing praise from wide receivers coach Mike Furrey. 'He's gonna probably be one of the most explosive guys that we have in our room in regard to matching his speed with his agility,' Furrey said of Mooney in an interview published Friday, June 19.

Footballguys view: The Bears offense has an opening for a speed receiver after they didn't bring back Taylor Gabriel. Mooney fits the ball, but he might not be ready for significant snaps after the offseason was cancelled due to coronvirus. Ted Ginn and Trevor Davis were also signed this offseason and could run some vertical routes if Mooney isn't in the coaches circle of trust at the end of camp.

Bears | Tarik Cohen improving durability    Tue Jun 16, 03:01 PM

Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen admitted recently he didn't take good enough care of his body in 2019 and is working this offseason to be better prepared for the wear and tear. ''I've been doing yoga now, stretching more often and just like the small training room - in-house things you do to keep your body durable,'' Cohen said. ''And to keep the wear-and-tear of the season off of you longer. I really slacked on that.'

Footballguys view: Cohen is a small-but-compact player so injuries and durability are always going to be a concern. He didn't stand out in the Bears backfield in 2019, and many are blaming QB Mitchell Trubisky for the offensive woes. We'll see if Nick Foles can win the starting job from Trubisky in training camp and if that helps out the Bears offense. Cohen is a frequently targeted part of the passing game, and if more efficient as a pass-catcher we could see him pay off as a deep flex option in PPR leagues.

Bears | Tarik Cohen part of the plan    Mon Jun 15, 09:55 AM

Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen is part of the team's plans in the offseason to try to restore his performance after he averaged just 5.77 yards per reception last season. A player has only caught 70 balls and averaged fewer yards once in NFL history. Cohen also had nine drops. Cohen said his body deteriorated more - and faster - toward the end of the season. His hips were tight and, because of that, his lower back hurt. Cohen said he has been doing yoga and stretching more often this offseason.

Footballguys view: We'll see if the Bears offense looks different in 2020. They didn't get as much as they wanted last year from either Cohen or his backfield mate David Montgomery. The team is going to have a competition for the starting quarterback position so perhaps Nick Foles (if he wins the job) can help this team perform at a higher level on offense. Cohen is a RB4 for Fantasy GMs in PPR leagues.

Bears | Kyle Fuller slows down passing games    Sun Jun 14, 05:36 PM

Chicago Bears CB Kyle Fuller has forced 50 incompletions since the start of the 2017 season - tied for the second-highest total in the league over that span - according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Fuller has been a success since the Bears passed on his fifth-year option, transition tagged him, and then matched Green Bay's four-year, $56 million dollar offer in 2018. He'll face Kenny Golladay and the Lions in Week 1.

Bears | Mitchell Trubisky standing ground    Fri Jun 12, 02:01 PM

Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky said Friday, June 13, that he has been motivated by the team's offseason acquisition of QB Nick Foles. 'It was kind of interesting to be, but that's the business we live in,' Trubisky said in a Zoom media conference. 'I think I was kind of pissed off in a good way. I've been motivated ever since. ... I know we're going to push each other, but I still feel like this is my team.'

Footballguys view: Trubisky and Foles are in an open quarterback battle, but Foles should be favored and Foles winning would be better for the offense and passing game targets unless Trubisky improves greatly this offseason. Trubisky is saying the right things, but he'll have to show that he's grasping the offense better than he did last year to follow through on this newfound motivation.

Bears | No luck after contact for David Montgomery    Tue Jun 9, 08:49 PM

Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery averaged 1.6 yards after contact as a rusher in 2019 - tied for the second-worst mark among qualified rushers.

Footballguys view: Montgomery has size but he did nothing when contacted. We'll see if the team can spring him better holes to help him build a head of steam that will help these after-contact numbers. Montgomery is a RB2/RB3 for Fantasy GMs in 2020 with a current ADP of RB23 (4.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bears | Anthony Miller's role grew    Sun Jun 7, 10:10 PM

Chicago Bears WR Anthony Miller had at least six receptions in four of the final seven games in 2019 after catching five passes or less in each of the first nine games.

Footballguys view: We love Miller's talent and see him as a WR4 with upside in 2020. Miller had surgery on his left shoulder after the season but is expected to be ready for Week 1.

Bears | Three TEs may compete for one spot    Sat Jun 6, 08:12 PM

Chicago Bears TEs Ben Braunecker, J.P. Holtz and Jesper Horsted may compete for one roster spot during training camp of the team decides to keep only four tight ends on the final roster.

Footballguys view: Special teams play will likely be the deciding factor. Braunecker is the most athletic and longest-tenured, but he has done little with the opportunity he has had in the past, so the team may look to move on from him without a strong summer.

Bears | Demetrius Harris likely to make team    Sat Jun 6, 08:05 PM

Chicago Bears TE Demetrius Harris appears to be a lock for the final roster, in the opinion of The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs.

Footballguys view: Harris has experience in Matt Nagy's system from his time in Kansas City. He'll be the second tight end with Jimmy Graham starting, or if second-round pick Cole Kmet is ready for prime time, the third tight end. The Bears should keep at least one other tight end beyond those three according to Biggs.

Bears | Tarik Cohen inefficient in red zone    Sat Jun 6, 05:40 PM

Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen caught 73 of 98 targets in 2019, but he caught just five of nine red-zone targets.

Footballguys view: Cohen will continue to be targeted early and often in the Bears offense. We'll see who wins the starting QB job between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles. Either way, Cohen should be a continued top target in the offense.

Bears | David Montgomery controlled red-zone duties    Sat Jun 6, 05:36 PM

Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery received 26 red-zone carries and scored five touchdowns on those carries in 2019. RB Tarik Cohen had just six red-zone carries with one touchdown.

Footballguys view: Montgomery got a ton of work near pay dirt, but he failed to have a high conversion rate on those carries. He's a low-end RB2 for Fantasy GMs because Cohen takes most all the targets int he passing game. Montgomery could outperform his current ADP (RB23, 4.05) if he becomes more efficient in the red zone.

Bears | Allen Robinson a top target    Sat Jun 6, 01:36 PM

Chicago Bears WR Allen Robinson finished with a 2019 team target share of 27.1 percent -- second among all pass-catchers with at least 100 targets.

Footballguys view: We'll see Robinson continue to get a huge share of the workload in 2020...regardless of who wins the starting QB job. Mitchell Trubisky will compete with Nick Foles for the top spot on the Bears depth chart.

Bears | Darnell Mooney working on routes    Mon Jun 1, 09:36 AM

Chicago Bears fifth-round pick WR Darnell Mooney has worked on his route running in recent weeks.

Footballguys view: Mooney had 41-straight starts in college at Tulane. He led his team in receptions over the last two seasons but drops were a problem for him. Route-running is not his forte as Mooney is a straight-line speed guy who struggles when asked to change direction at speed. We'll see if this extra work helps him in that aspect of his game. Monitor him in deep dynasty formats.

Bears | Preseason to determine QB1 in Chicago    Tue May 26, 03:11 PM

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy said Tuesday, May 26, QBs Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles will both see time working with the starters in preseason games.

Footballguys view: Trubisky was supposed to be the franchise quarterback for the Bears but he has disappointed as a pro. Foles has experience and a championship history. He's worked under Nagy before when he was with the Chiefs, so Foles may not take that long to get up to speed. In fact, Foles may just end up winning the starting job. We'll see how this shakes out in training camp.

Bears | Ted Ginn Jr. the No. 3?    Sun May 24, 09:34 PM

Chicago Bears WR Ted Ginn Jr. has the 'slight edge' over WR Javon Wims and WR Cordarrelle Patterson for the No. 3 receiver role, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com, but Rosenthal doesn't believe any of them will play 'starter' snaps.

Footballguys view: Ginn has the edge due to his experience. He should be utilized to take the top off the defense, but Ginn will not be much of a fantasy factor.

Bears | Cole Kmet mastering playbook    Thu May 21, 09:23 PM

Chicago Bears rookie TE Cole Kmet is proving to be a fast learner of the team's playbook, according to head coach Matt Nagy Thursday, May 21. 'I can't trick him. He knows it all,' Nagy said. 'I guarantee you - and I'll put it out there - he will know this playbook inside out. That's not going to be the issue.'

Footballguys view: Kmet was arguably the best tight end in this draft class. It wasn't a great group of tight ends entering the league in the 2020 NFL draft, but Kmet stands out because of his versatile skill set. He's not a dynamic athlete but he's a consistent chain-mover who could one day be a starter for the Bears. He'll learn behind Jimmy Graham in 2020.

Bears | Nick Foles quickly picking up Chicago system    Sat May 16, 10:53 AM

Chicago Bears QB Nick Foles, who will compete for the starting quarterback job with the Bears, is quickly getting caught up on the team's offensive system. The system isn't new to Foles, as it is the same one he learned under Bears head coach Matt Nagy when the two were with the Kansas City Chiefs. 'It's like riding a bike,' Nagy said. 'Once you present somebody like Nick the playbook and they start looking at it, all of a sudden it just clicks.'

Footballguys view: Foles worked with Nagy before so picking up this system should be a breeze. We'll see if he can beat out 2017 first-round pick Mitchell Trubisky in training camp for the starting job.

Bears | Hands betrayed Tarik Cohen in 2019    Wed May 13, 11:22 PM

Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen was credited with eight drops last season - the most of any running back in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Cohen needs to do a better job of snaring passes with his role on the Bears offense. He's a smaller target so passes need to be more on the mark with Cohen than they are with larger receiving backs with a larger wingspan. Cohen has flex appeal for Fantasy GMs in PPR formats.

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears WR Ted Ginn Jr.'s one-year contract with the team is for $1.187 million and includes a $137,500 signing bonus as well as $750,000 guaranteed.

'(We are) very comfortable (with Johnson's medicals,)' general manager Ryan Pace said. 'He's missed one game in two years. He played through an injury last year, which I think says a lot about him and kind of who he is. He got it fixed and this will be something that will limit him in some of the offseason program.
