Colts | Jacob Eason to be busy in preseason opener    Tue Aug 3, 01:49 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Jacob Eason is expected to play about two quarters against the Carolina Panthers in the teams' preseason opener on Aug. 15, according to head coach Frank Reich.

Footballguys view: The Colts have to give Eason a lot of work. He's in line to be the starter with Carson Wentz out for the start of the regular season. Eason is a big-bodied pocket passer with a big arm and say-it-don't-spray-it accuracy. The Colts insist they are not interested in trading for a veteran (like Nick Foles) but that sentiment could change if Eason doesn't look good in the preseason.

Colts | More on Carson Wentz    Mon Aug 2, 12:45 PM

Updating previous reports, Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz (foot) had an old injury, potentially in high school, where he unknowingly suffered a broken foot. A piece of bone has broken off from that original injury.

Footballguys view: Wentz (foot) will miss five to 12 weeks after deciding to undergo foot surgery. The team went back-and-forth on the decision for Wentz to have surgery, and a 12-week absence means Wentz would get into action around October. Adjust all Colts fantasy players accordingly as this is bad news for their offense.

Colts | Carson Wentz out 5-12 weeks    Mon Aug 2, 12:19 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz (foot) will miss five to 12 weeks after deciding to undergo foot surgery. Head coach Frank Reich said they went back and forth with it all weekend, but they determined surgery was the correct option.

Footballguys view: The Colts have 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason as their starter right now with Wentz down for the beginning of the regular season. Rookie Sam Ehlinger will get some opportunity to do more as well. At this time, the Colts have not shown interest in adding a veteran quarterback while Wentz is out. Josina Anderson reports the Colts have had "no substantive point-to-point talks" for Bears QB Nick Foles. Most think if the Colts do make a move, it would be for Foles given his history with head coach Frank Reich.

Indianapolis Colts DT Taylor Stallworth (hamstring) exited practice with an apparent hamstring injury Saturday, July 31.

Colts | No surgery for Carson Wentz yet    Sun Aug 1, 02:56 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz (foot) plans to avoid surgery at this point and will rehab his injured foot over the next few days, according to a source. Wentz has a chance to play Week 1 if he can make progress with rehab.

Footballguys view: This plan doesn't usually avoid surgery in the long run, but it can allow a team to have full availability of a player for part or all of a season. Mobility is important to Wentz's game, so while this could get 17 games played back in play for him, it is still a development that diminishes his fantasy outlook. A local report by beat writer Mike Chappell indicates that the Colts are still mulling over their options, so this may not be the last update we get on the team's decision on the plan of care for Wentz.

Colts | Brett Hundley signed by Indy    Sat Jul 31, 02:03 PM

Free-agent QB Brett Hundley (Cardinals) was signed an undisclosed contract Saturday, July 31, with the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Hundley comes to the Colts because they are without starter Carson Wentz due to a foot injury suffered in practice this week. Wentz may miss the early part of the regular season and that means Jacob Eason will be their starter. Behind Eason, Hundley competes with guys like Sam Ehlinger and UDFA Jalen Morton to establish the depth chart.

Colts | Ryan Kelly to miss several weeks    Sat Jul 31, 11:58 AM

Indianapolis Colts C Ryan Kelly (elbow) is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after sustaining a hyperextended left elbow during an 11-on-11 play in practice Thursday, July 29, according to offensive coordinator Marcus Brady.

Footballguys view: If Kelly misses a couple of weeks that puts him on track for the start of the regular season. This is another injury for a team that already saw their starting QB Carson Wentz (foot) get hurt in camp, and their offensive line is already without starting left tackle Eric Fisher (Achilles' active/PUP list).

Colts | Carson Wentz may need surgery    Fri Jul 30, 06:03 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz (foot) is expected to miss the entire preseason and may need to undergo surgery, according to sources.

Footballguys view: He hopes to play through the injury, but he likely would miss regular season time if he undergoes surgery. Stay tuned. Jacob Eason will start if Wentz misses time.

Colts | Carson Wentz undergoing tests    Fri Jul 30, 12:48 PM

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz (foot) is undergoing tests Friday, July 30, on his injured foot, and the team is awaiting a firm diagnosis before proceeding.

Footballguys view: Some reports say the team isn't concerned, but they didn't show concern about Andrew Luck until they announced he was retiring. We'll be on the edge of our seats waiting for follow up news on this developing situation.

Colts | Carson Wentz idle    Fri Jul 30, 11:36 AM

Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz (foot) is out of practice Friday, July 30, due to an undisclosed foot injury.

Footballguys view: Wentz is out indefinitely for further examination to determine the severity of the injury and next steps. This could be a very serious development for the Colts, one that has them looking at veteran quarterbacks in a trade or even wooing Philip Rivers to come out of retirement. If you're drafting today, bump Wentz out of your quarterback rankings and think twice before taking Jonathan Taylor in the first round.

Colts | Justin Houston will play    Fri Jul 30, 08:57 AM

Free-agent DE Justin Houston (Colts) will play in the 2021 season and has been pursued by multiple teams in the offseason.

Footballguys view: Houston will be an impact edge rush signing and he can play in a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. He won't be an IDP factor except in sack heavy leagues, but he could play a part in the balance of power in a division or conference.

Colts | Parris Campbell to be full participant    Mon Jul 26, 11:22 PM

Indianapolis Colts WR Parris Campbell (knee) will not have any limitations during training camp, according to general manager Chris Ballard.

Footballguys view: Campbell has talent (he certainly has speed) but his two-year career has been marred by injuries and he's only played in nine games during that time. He was lost to a knee injury last year in Week 2, but he's had almost a year to recover. Campbell could be a nice slot target for QB Carson Wentz, leading to deep flex value in PPR leagues. His current ADP is WR60 (14.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Colts | Marlon Mack good to go    Mon Jul 26, 11:50 AM

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack (Achilles') is 100 percent entering training camp.

Footballguys view: Mack tore his Achilles' last year in Week 1 and has been on the road to recovery ever since. He's a talented running back with a slashing style who will work as a reserve player behind starter Jonathan Taylor. If Taylor were to miss time, Mack would get a sizable role with Nyheim Hines staying as the primary receiving back. This makes Mack an interesting late-round handcuff for Fantasy GMs who have the bench space.

Colts | NFI list for Dayo Odeyingbo    Sun Jul 25, 12:30 PM

Indianapolis Colts DE Dayo Odeyingbo (Achilles) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Sunday, July 25.

Footballguys view: The Colts took Odeyingbo despite his torn achilles, giving them three players along with left tackle Eric Fisher and running Marlon Mack who are recovering from the injury. Odeyingbo is disruptive player who can also line up at end and help harvest the value of having war daddy DeForest Buckner anchoring the defensive line.

Colts | Eric Fisher to miss start of camp    Sun Jul 25, 12:26 PM

Indianapolis Colts OT Eric Fisher (Achilles) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, July 25.

Footballguys view: This was expected as Fisher's injury happened in the AFC title game in late January. He's no sure thing to be available for Week 1, but the hope is at least he'll be activated from the PUP list and not miss the first six games. Sam Tevi and Julie'n Davenport are the likely stopgaps at left tackle in Fisher isn't ready for the season opener against the Seahawks.

Colts | RB Taylor the 'Main Guy' in Backfield    Sun Jul 4, 03:19 PM

Zak Keefer, from The Athletic, reports Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich acknowledged the run game will go through Jonathan Taylor, who has "earned the right to be the main guy" in the Colts' backfield.

Footballguys view: Some have predicted a regression from Taylor based on historical data in the NFL. Taylor is one of 30 running backs since 2000 to top 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie, but only five backs in that group had more rushing yards in their second season. History aside, it looks like Taylor will be able to beat those numbers based on his role. Yes, Marlon Mack (when healthy) could push for more snaps. Yes, Nyheim Hines will get plenty of work as a receiver. However, Taylor should be able to post RB1 numbers for your fantasy team as the lead back for the Colts.

Colts | Mike Strachan catches eye of coach    Thu Jul 1, 10:48 PM

Indianapolis Colts WR Mike Strachan has impressed head coach Frank Reich during spring practices. 'Strachan, the size and speed and he's got good short area quickness, he just has great competitive disposition as an athlete,' Reich said. 'He's really smart. So just really happy about the immediate impression he's made.'

Footballguys view: Strachan was a seventh-round pick out of Charleston in the 2021 NFL draft. He was a track star in college and he brings that skill set to the pro game. At 6-feet, 5-inches, 226 pounds Strachan has a great size/speed combination. He's got a nose for the end zone and can win "above the rim" near pay dirt. He's buried on the Colts depth chart right now but we love this kind of prospect in deep dynasty formats.

Colts | More blocking for Jack Doyle    Wed Jun 30, 10:59 PM

Indianapolis Colts TE Jack Doyle may have to be used 'more in the run game' this season because of the retirement of left tackle Anthony Castonzo, according to Zak Keefer of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: The Colts can use Doyle in a number of roles. He could work more as a blocker with Mo Alie-Cox and rookie Kylen Branson competing for more targets. Doyle is more of a TE3 for Fantasy GMs which means he'll go undrafted and be on the waiver wire in most leagues.

Colts | Kylen Granson makes an impression    Wed Jun 30, 09:47 PM

Indianapolis Colts TE Kylen Granson made a strong impression during spring practices, according to head coach Frank Reich. 'He's an explosive athlete,' Reich said. 'We knew he was a real smart guy and he's picking up the offense real fast.'

Footballguys view: Granson is built like a wide receiver and has the makings of a move tight end at the pro level. During his college career at SMU (transferred from Rice), Granson showed a nose for the end zone with 14 touchdowns over the last two seasons. He was moved all over the formation and brings versatility to the field. Granson is behind Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox on the depth chart but we like monitoring him in dynasty formats.

Colts | Sam Tevi may begin season as starter    Mon Jun 28, 03:28 PM

Indianapolis Colts OT Sam Tevi probably will begin the season as the starting left tackle if OT Eric Fisher (Achilles) is not ready for Week 1, according to ESPN.com's Mike Wells.

Colts | Regression for Jonathan Taylor?    Sun Jun 27, 08:42 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor is one of 30 running backs since 2000 to top 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie, but only five backs in that group had more rushing yards in their second season.

Footballguys view: Taylor got stronger as the season went on in 2020 and his Week 17 performance against the Jaguars (253 yards rushing) put him over 1,000 for the season. Taylor joins Saquon Barkley, Kareem Hunt, Eddie Lacy, Doug Martin, Matt Forte, Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, and LaDainian Tomlinson as the last rookie running backs since 2000 to rush for over 1,100 yards, have double-digit touchdowns, and reach 35-plus receptions. With momentum heading into this season - and 17 games to be played - projecting Taylor to surpass his rushing total from last year makes sense. His current ADP is RB8 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues and he's the type of player who could push to be a top-5 fantasy running back in 2021.

Colts | Carson Wentz to take part in workouts    Sat May 29, 01:40 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz said he plans to work out with some of his teammates in June and July before the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Wentz wants to establish the strongest chemistry he possibly can before training camp hits, so like a lot of quarterbacks he'll put on a passing camp for the fellas. We'll see if Wentz can get his pro career back on track after things fell apart with the Eagles. Fantasy GMs believe Wentz is a lower end QB2, and he's got a current ADP of QB18 (12.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Colts | Marlon Mack attends workouts    Fri May 21, 07:22 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Marlon Mack (Achilles) was present at the offseason workouts this week but did not participate in any of the team drills.

Footballguys view: Mack is on track to be ready for training camp. He tore his Achilles about eight months ago and is already out there for workouts. The Colts are wisely easing him back into action with a plan that he'll be a full participant in August.

Colts | Indy finalizes rookie deal for Kylen Granson    Wed May 19, 02:52 PM

Indianapolis Colts fourth-round draft pick TE Kylen Granson (SMU) signed a four-year contract worth $4.186 million - including a $706,368 signing bonus - on Wednesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Granson began his college career at Rice but ended up transferring to SMU and put up some great numbers. He's a hybrid TE/WR/H-back who can line up all over the formation. Granson does a good job tracking the ball in the air and has a nose for the end zone (14 touchdowns over the last two years). We'll monitor his progress in dynasty formats.

Colts | Sam Ehlinger officially in the fold    Wed May 19, 02:49 PM

Indianapolis Colts sixth-round draft pick QB Sam Ehlinger (Texas) signed a four-year contract worth $3.61 million - including a $130,708 signing bonus - on Wednesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Ehlinger was a top dual-threat quarterback coming out of high school and the Longhorns always had a chance in a close game when he was under center. He operated a run/pass option offense which takes advantage of his rushing ability, and scouts call Ehlinger a "gamer." Ehlinger needs to make quicker decisions as a passer and he doesn't have a rocket arm. However, his competitive spirit and athleticism make him a player to watch in dynasty formats.

Colts | Parris Campbell pronounces himself fit    Wed May 19, 01:45 PM

Indianapolis Colts WR Parris Campbell told Stephen Holder of The Athletic that he was cleared to practice last week and is now '100 percent' after recovering from the knee injury that ended his season in Week 2 last year.

Footballguys view: Campbell has flashed talent during his brief time in the NFL, but he's also been one of the most oft-injured players during the last couple of years. In the slot, Campbell can be dangerous and he could become a favorite target of QB Carson Wentz in 2021. Campbell has upside in PPR formats and his usage could be higher than some think...if he can stay healthy. He's a late-round flier at his current ADP of WR83 (14.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.
