Panthers | Trenton Cannon claimed by Panthers    Tue Aug 4, 05:12 PM

New York Jets RB Trenton Cannon was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Footballguys view: Cannon is an interesting player to monitor but only in crazy deep dynasty formats. He's got tons of speed and quickness to his game. Cannon can change direction on a dime and make defenders look silly in the open field. He was buried on the depth chart with the Jets and now gets a fresh start in Carolina.

Panthers | Mike Davis may be top backup in Carolina    Thu Jul 23, 10:33 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Mike Davis 'might have the edge' over Reggie Bonnafon and Jordan Scarlett as the direct backup for Christian McCaffrey, according to ESPN's David Newton.

Footballguys view: The Panthers will replace McCaffrey with some sort of committee if the starter goes down, so there's not a clear handcuff here. Davis is the most accomplished NFL back, Bonnafon might be the most dynamic, while Scarlett is the best downhill runner.

Panthers | Kenny Robinson signs rookie deal    Tue Jul 21, 04:32 PM

Carolina Panthers S Kenny Robinson signed a four-year rookie contract worth $3.62 million Tuesday, July 21.

Footballguys view: Robinson played for the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL last season. He has good length and aggression for the position and is the rare rookie with professional experience. Robinson needs to get better at play recognition and run support if he wants to be the best pro he can be.

Panthers | Jeremy Chinn gets deal done    Tue Jul 21, 04:29 PM

Carolina Panthers second-round pick S Jeremy Chinn signed a four-year rookie deal worth $5.24 million Tuesday, July 21.

Footballguys view: Chinn has great bloodlines as his uncle is Hall of Fame safety Steve Atwater (Broncos), and the rookie from Southern Illinois was one of the most versatile secondary players in the 2020 NFL draft. He's strong and loves to initiate contact but sometimes overruns plays due to his aggression. Chinn is a ballhawk who recorded 31 pass breakups and 13 interceptions in four seasons of college ball.

Panthers | Carolina signs final two rookies    Tue Jul 21, 04:25 PM

Carolina Panthers second-round pick DE Yetur Gross-Matos signed his rookie, four-year deal Tuesday, July 21, according to his agent, Andy Simms. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gross-Matos is an unfinished prospect but he has a ton of potential and upside. He has length and quickness to get around that edge and get after the passer. Gross-Matos has multiple moves to get around blockers but he needs work better to stack moves. He'll need to learn how to get his hands up when he doesn't get home as Gross-Matos had zero pass breakups in college.

Panthers | Teddy Bridgewater dinked and dunked in 2019    Sun Jul 5, 05:17 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater's average depth of completion of 4.7 yards as a member of the New Orleans Saints last season was the lowest mark by a quarterback in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Bridgewater's emphasis on the short passing game wasn't that different from Drew Brees when he was the starter for New Orleans and Carolina has said they expect more deep passing from him this year, so this shouldn't be a reason to avoid him or new Panthers deep threat Robby Anderson late in fantasy drafts.

Panthers | Jordan Chinn may have multiple roles    Sun Jul 5, 03:12 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Jeremy Chinn said he participated in video meetings with several defensive groups this offseason and believes he will be able to line up at multiple positions.

Footballguys view: Chinn should be a box safety and very valuable right away in IDP leagues playing on a team that is likely to trail a lot this year. He should be drafted in redraft leagues along with being a top 3 safety in dynasty rookie drafts.

Panthers | Arm strength no issue for Teddy Bridgewater?    Thu Jun 25, 09:48 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater is 'exactly what we want' and has 'a great arm,' according to head coach Matt Rhule.'I think this offense, in general, when you look at in New Orleans, that iteration of it, where (new offensive coordinator Joe Brady) first learned it, is not necessarily a vertical, down-the-field passing game as much as it is a catch-and-run, underneath, matchup-type passing game. You obviously have to be able to throw the ball downfield. Teddy's got a great arm. I can remember he threw what I would call a launch route 48 yards down the right sideline to the 12-yard line against somebody. So he certainly has the arm strength to do it,' Rhule told Joe Person of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Bridgewater has never had a rocket arm, and that's not going to change now. However, he's always been smart and accurate as a passer. Those are traits that should be highlighted in Rhule's offense. He's a QB2 with upside for Fantasy GMs this year and has a current ADP of QB24 (14.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Robby Anderson a true vertical receiver    Sun Jun 21, 07:08 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Robby Anderson has been targeted 20 yards or more downfield 31 percent of the time in his career - tied for the second-highest mark in the league since 2015.

Footballguys view: Anderson is taking his talents to Carolina this season where he'll continue to be a deep threat. He's got to build chemistry with QB Teddy Bridgewater and we believe they will do just that. His college coach at Temple, Matt Rhule, is the new head coach of the Panthers and that should give Anderson a head start. Anderson has deep flex appeal for Fantasy GMs this year and could easily outperform his current ADP of WR67 (14.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel to be used in space    Fri Jun 19, 09:29 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel is expected to be used in space all around the field, according to offensive coordinator Joe Brady. 'Curtis is going to be critical to success,' Brady said. 'Curtis is the one that I can't wait to see him do what he does on the field. Curtis is a playmaker. He fits the mold of what we're looking for in this type of offense, a guy that you can utilize all around the field and get the ball in the hands and good things happen. I think you saw stuff last year that shows that he can be a big-play wide receiver, down the field. We're getting the ball in space and I'm excited for him to take the next leap.'

Footballguys view: Samuel played much, much better than his stats indicate last year. If Teddy Bridgewater can find and hit him deep more often, or if Brady makes more use of Samuel than Scott Turner did last year, Samuel will be a huge value at his very low ADP.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey rarely came off field    Sun Jun 14, 02:17 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey was on the field for 93.4 percent of the offensive snaps in 2019.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey probably won't be on the field that much this year, but he should still lead running backs in snaps. It would be good to know his handcuff but that's not clear right now. Jordan Scarlett, Reggie Bonnafon, and Mike Davis are the top candidates in this camp battle to watch.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly officially back in football    Thu Jun 4, 08:57 PM

Former Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly was officially hired as a pro scout Thursday, June 4. 'During the season, it'll be player evaluation and then advance scouting stuff. So if we play a team next week, we've got to get everything set up and ready to go, so when the coaches come in on Monday, they're not starting from square one,' Kuechly said.

Footballguys view: It's great to see the Panthers keep an all-time great in their organization despite the regime change this offseason. Kuechly has a future in broadcasting if he wants it, but it appears being closer to the game is more appealing to him.

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore caught 92.6 percent of his 94 catchable targets in 2019, according to Sports Info Solutions.

Footballguys view: Moore is one of the best young receivers in the league, largely due to his hands and consistency. Fantasy GMs are looking at him as a WR2 with upside in 2020. Moore has a current ADP of WR17 (4.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Opportunity at hand for Teddy Bridgewater    Sat May 30, 01:31 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater is entering a season as his team's unquestioned starter for the first time since 2015, and head coach Matt Ruhle said he jumped at the chance to give Bridgewater the opportunity. 'I believe so wholeheartedly in who he is as a quarterback,' Rhule said Friday, May 29, during an appearance on NFL Network. 'I believe in his abilities, I believe in his arm strength, I believe in his accuracy, I believe in his decision-making but, beyond that, I know he's going to make everyone else that much better.'

Footballguys view: Bridgewater is intelligent and accurate as a passer, and that helps him be an effective starter. The Panthers are moving in a different direction with Cam Newton getting cut and Bridgewater getting signed. New head coach Matt Rhule will have Bridgewater lead the passing attack featuring some pretty good weapons. Fantasy GMs can look at Bridgewater as a low-end QB2 with upside. His current ADP is QB25 (15.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey got it done after catch    Mon May 25, 10:08 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey amassed 1,009 yards after the catch in 2019 - 43 more than second-place Austin Ekeler (966) and 137 more than any other back since at least 2015, according to Sports Info Solutions.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey was the third back to be part of the 1,000/1,000 club in NFL history. He joined Roger Craig (49ers) and Marshall Faulk (Rams) to rush for over 1,000 yards and go over 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. A large part of his game is about making defenders miss. He could reach similar numbers in 2020.
