Philadelphia Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley was hired as assistant head coach/running backs for the Detroit Lions Monday, Jan. 25.
Footballguys view: Dan Campbell, new Lions head coach, is putting together a helluva staff. Former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn has signed on as the offensive coordinator, and now Staley comes on board to help run the offense and the backfield. Staley has been thought of as a potential head coach but was passed over with the Eagles. Now, he'll join a new staff and a new team to further advance his career. |

Updating a previous story, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is likely to be traded before the fifth day of the 2021 league year in March, when he is due a $10 million bonus.
Footballguys view: We'll see if this domino or Deshaun Watson falls first in what promises to be a fun 2021 quarterback offseason. |

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has expressed a desire for a fresh start and the team plans to begin exploring trade possibilities in the coming weeks, according to sources Saturday, Jan. 23.
Footballguys view: A trade would make sense for both sides as Stafford shouldn't be interested in another rebuild at this point in his career and new general manager Brad Holmes should want more material to craft the roster in his image. Washington, San Francisco, Indianapolis, and Denver should be very interested with at least 4-5 potential suitors if not a lot more. Stafford could change a team's trajectory as much as Tom Brady did last year. |

Former New Orleans Saints secondary coach Aaron Glenn was officially hired as the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions Saturday, Jan. 23.
Footballguys view: Glenn was on the Saints staff with new Lions head coach Dan Campbell for the last five year. He has experience as a player in a 3-4 defense, but coached a 3-4 defense in New Orleans. The team could play more one gap up front and cover 2 (like the Saints have) in the secondary under Glenn. |

New Orleans Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell was hired by the Detroit Lions as head coach Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Footballguys view: It's finally officially official. This move was anticipated for quite some time, and now it's coming to fruition. Campbell was the right-hand man for Sean Payton with the Saints over the last five years. We'll see what direction he takes the team in and if that includes QB Matthew Stafford in 2021. Campbell is known as a players coach and was the top target for the Lions. They just had to wait for the Saints to be eliminated from the playoffs to make this hire official. |

New Orleans Saints secondary coach Aaron Glenn is expected to be named as the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Glenn will have his work cut out for him with the Lions void of talent on the defensive side of the ball. He worked for the last five years with new Lions head coach Dan Campbell and brings a lot of quality experience with him even though he's only been in the coaching world for seven years. |

Detroit Lions impending free-agent WR Danny Amendola probably will not re-sign with the Lions this offseason, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein.
Footballguys view: That's not a big surprise. The Lions are going to have some work to do at the wide receiver position. Marvin Jones Jr and Kenny Golladay are both set to hit free agency, so that would make the top three receivers for the Lions in 2020 potentially playing elsewhere in 2021. However, there is plenty of buzz about Golladay getting the franchise tag. |

Detroit Lions impending free-agent WR Kenny Golladay is a candidate to receive the franchise tag this offseason.
Footballguys view: No player is ever happy with the franchise tag, but Golladay might be upset more than normal because of the Lions rebuild. We'll see if the team wants to work out a long-term deal with Golladay if they do tag him. Golladay had an injury-shortened 2020 season but he could still command a price tag around $20 million annually. |

Los Angeles Rams director of college scouting Brad Holmes is expected to be hired Thursday, Jan. 14, as the Detroit Lions' new general manger, per source. The two sides are finalizing a multi-year deal.
Footballguys view: Holmes worked his way up from a PR intern with the Rams in 2003 to the new Lions GM in 2021. His ability to implement analytics and technology into his scouting routine made him a standout candidate according to Lions team president Rod Wood. We're likely to see Holmes find a new quarterback this offseason as there is plenty of buzz that the Lions will look to trade long-time starter Matthew Stafford. |

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford went 20-for-31 for 293 yards, three touchdowns and one interception against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 17. RB Adrian Peterson rushed for 63 yards and one touchdown on seven carries, while RB D'Andre Swift rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries. WR Marvin Jones caught eight passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 11 targets, while WR Quintez Cephus caught two passes for 51 yards and one touchdown on three targets.
Footballguys view: Stafford looked great despite playing with a myriad of injuries. He should be on the trade market as the Lions look to the future in a rebuilding moment. They'll hire a new head coach and general manager this offseason and Stafford is probably at the very end of his prime. Jones will also be a free agent and can still start elsewhere. |

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle, rib, thumb) is expected to start Sunday, Jan. 3, in the Week 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings, barring a setback, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Stafford is as tough as nails. He's battled through various injuries this year and will stay out there as long as he can. As we've seen in previous weeks, Stafford may begin the game but that doesn't mean he will finish it. This could be his final game with the Lions. |
