Dolphins | Matt Breida pegged for 35 percent    Tue Aug 11, 12:02 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Matt Breida is expected to receive 35 percent of the touches in the backfield, according to beat writer Cameron Wolfe.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Breida is going to be the change-of-pace back to starter Jordan Howard in 2020. The Dolphins should be running the ball early and often as they groom rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa (who should be starting over Ryan Fitzpatrick soon enough).

Dolphins | Jordan Howard expected to lead    Tue Aug 11, 12:01 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Jordan Howard is expected to carry the rushing load in 2020, in the opinion of beat writer Cameron Wolfe. Wolfe expects Howard to receive 50 percent of the backfield touches.

Footballguys view: Howard is going to be the banger on the roster. He'll soften up defenses on the whole was a battering ram between the tackles. When it comes to catching the rock out of the backfield, Matt Breida will be the back the Dolphins turn to.

Dolphins | Chester Rogers may be slot receiver    Mon Aug 10, 08:28 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Chester Rogers is considered the leading candidate for the slot receiver job but will have to compete with at least WR Isaiah Ford and WR Gary Jennings for the job.

Footballguys view: Rogers has experience at the position and is a good option at the slot when healthy. Do not forget about Jakeem Grant in this competition either as he might be the best of the bunch behind DeVante Parker and Preston Williams.

Dolphins | Miami adding Nate Wieting    Mon Aug 10, 04:43 PM

Former Cleveland Browns TE Nate Wieting was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins Monday, Aug. 10, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wieting was picked up as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa in 2020. He's not like other Iowa TEs in the league like George Kittle, T.J. Hockenson or Noah Fant. In four seasons with the Hawkeyes, Wieting went from walk on to starter but only caught 13 total passes in his career. He was often banged up in college, having surgeries on his shoulder, knee and foot. He'll be a long-shot for the Dolphins roster and may just be looking to impress enough to stay around on the practice squad.

Dolphins | Chester Rogers signed    Sun Aug 9, 09:31 AM

The Miami Dolphins signed free-agent WR Chester Rogers (Colts) to a one-year contract Sunday, Oct. 9. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Rogers, Isaiah Ford, and Jakeem Grant will compete to be the #3 receiver behind DeVante Parker and Preston Williams. Williams isn't a sure thing to be ready for Week 1, so there's an outside chance that Rogers starts Week 1. He can also help on special teams. The Dolphins needed camp bodies who can contribute after Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson opted out.

Dolphins | Miami adding Ricardo Louis    Sat Aug 8, 04:06 PM

Free-agent WR Ricardo Louis (Dolphins) agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins Saturday, Aug. 8, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins had two receivers (Allen Hurns, Albert Wilson) opt out for the 2020 season. Adding Louis for veteran depth makes sense. Louis was signed to a one-year deal (as an ERFA) earlier this year but was cut back in July. A neck injury (2018) and knee injury (2019) has kept Louis off the field for the last two regular seasons. Once thought of as a long-shot for the 53-man roster, his chances are better now.

Dolphins | Jordan Howard up in air    Sat Aug 8, 11:41 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Jordan Howard's role is undefined, according to running backs coach Eric Studesville.

Footballguys view: Howard should be the lead back when it comes to carries in 2020. He's a powerful back who can grind down an opponent as the game goes on. Howard should be replaced on passing downs with Matt Breida.

Dolphins | MIA not quitting on Kalen Ballage    Sat Aug 8, 11:01 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage hasn't lost the team's faith as running backs coach Eric Studesville said he hasn't given up on him.

Footballguys view: Ballage has been disappointing during his time with the Dolphins. He's a big back but he doesn't run with enough authority. He can catch passes out of the backfield but that part of his game has not impressed in the pros. Ballage is now competing for the no.3 spot in the RB room behind Jordan Howard and Matt Breida.

Dolphins | Jakeem Grant has opportunity    Sat Aug 8, 09:21 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Jakeem Grant has an opportunity for playing time with WRs Albert Wilson and Allen Hurns opting out.

Footballguys view: Grant is now in line for the no.3 wide receiver job on the depth chart behind DeVante Parker and Preston Williams. He's a smaller receiver but Grant is ultra quick and can make defenders look silly in the open field.

Dolphins | Three players activated    Fri Aug 7, 04:08 PM

Miami Dolphins DT Davon Godchaux, S Brandon Jones and DE Shaq Lawson were activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Aug. 7.

Footballguys view: Jones could play a big role in the secondary as a rookie third round pick and Lawson will be counted on to generate pass rush for a new look defense after being signed as a free agent.

Dolphins | Miami talking to receivers    Thu Aug 6, 05:02 PM

Free-agent WRs Ricardo Louis (Dolphins) and Chester Rogers (Colts) have been contacted and put through physicals by the Miami Dolphins, according to a source Thursday, Aug. 6.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Dolphins have had two receivers opt out (Albert Wilson, Allen Hurns) so their WR corps is getting a bit thin. Add in the fact that Preston Williams is still on the road to recovery from the knee injury he suffered mid-season in 2019, and you can see how the Dolphins would be in the market for more wide receivers. We'll see if any of these guys get signed.

Dolphins | Albert Wilson officially on reserve list    Wed Aug 5, 05:30 PM

Updating a previous story, Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson was officially placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: Wilson is now the second Dolphins WR to opt out this year, joining Allen Hurns in the decision to miss the 2020 season. The team is getting thinner at the position. DeVante Parker and Preston Williams are the top two receivers with Jakeem Grant and Isaiah Ford as the No.3 and No.4 options.

Dolphins | Preston Williams being eased back    Wed Aug 5, 04:50 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Preston Williams (knee) is being eased back this offseason and a team source said there's no assurance he will be available for Week 1, but the Dolphins are cautiously optimistic.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Williams was looking good last year as an undrafted rookie out of Colorado State. A knee injury cut his rookie season short after eight games, and he had knee surgery in November. Williams has been on the road to recovery ever since then and might have to be eased in at the start of the regular season. He may not be 100 percent until the midway point of this season, and Williams may not be 100 percent healthy this year at all.

Dolphins | Albert Wilson opts out    Wed Aug 5, 11:50 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson informed the team he's opting out for the 2020 season.

Dolphins | Allen Hurns put on reserve list    Tue Aug 4, 06:18 PM

Updating a previous story, Miami Dolphins WR Allen Hurns was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Dolphins | Preston Williams cleared    Mon Aug 3, 11:36 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Preston Williams (knee) has been cleared for football activities, according to head coach Brian Flores. 'He's running and lifting,' Flores said. He needs to learn new, small things in the offense, according to Flores.

Footballguys view: More good news for the Dolphins here. Williams looked really good last year as a rookie before going down with a knee injury in Week 8. In 2019, Williams had the second most targets among Dolphins WRs and third most on the team as a whole, despite missing half the season. This year, Williams has upside as a late-round stash for your bench. His current ADP is WR56 (13.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

  Dolphins | Ryan Fitzpatrick: I'm a placeholder    Sat Aug 1, 02:42 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick says he fully realizes his time as the team's starter is limited with first-round draft pick Tua Tagovailoa getting a green light for workouts. 'I don't know how much time it will be before Tua will be in the lineup. I know that I am the placeholder,' Fitzpatrick said in a recent interview with ESPN. 'We've already had that conversation. I've told him, 'I'm going to do the best I can to lead this team and win football games when I'm out there.' Whenever it is that Tua gets his chance whether it's early or late or whenever, I'm going to be his biggest cheerleader.'

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick knows what's up. The veteran is there to steer the ship until rookie first-round QB Tua Tagovailoa is ready. The Dolphins are going to have a competition for the starting job in training camp and Tagovailoa has already been cleared for full participation. We could see the rookie win the job in camp and begin the regular season as the starter.

Dolphins | Tua Tagovailoa cleared    Wed Jul 29, 10:56 AM

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) has been cleared to practice without limitations, according to head coach Brian Flores.

Footballguys view: Tagovailoa could be the franchise quarterback the Dolphins have been searching for since the days of Dan Marino. Now cleared for all football activities, Tagovailoa will compete with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job. While Fitzpatrick has a ton of experience, he's no match for the skill level of Tagovailoa. We could see the rookie first-round pick starting for the Dolphins near the start (or right at the start) of the regular season.

Kansas City Chiefs CB Javaris Davis was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins Monday, July 27. The team also waived TE Michael Roberts (undisclosed) with a non-football injury designation.

Footballguys view: Davis was picked up as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn by the Chiefs after the draft. He ran a 4.39 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine earlier this year and could be a sub-package corner and special teams contributor for the Dolphins.

Dolphins | Miami acquires Adam Shaheen    Sat Jul 25, 06:59 PM

Chicago Bears TE Adam Shaheen was acquired by the Miami Dolphins Saturday, July 25, in exchange for a conditional 2021 sixth-round draft choice, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Shaheen was a small school tight end who was an interesting prospect a few years ago. He's done little to nothing in the NFL and he's been a disappointment for the Bears. Now, with the Dolphins we'll see Shaheen get a fresh start as a reserve in the pecking order behind starter Mike Gesicki.
