49ers | Christian McCaffrey in rare company Sat Sep 13, 08:02 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey had his 31st career games with 50-plus yards rushing and 50-plus yards receiving in Week 1, and only Marshall Faulk has more such games in NFL history.

San Francisco 49ers practice squad QB Adrian Martinez and TE Brayden Willis were elevated to the active roster Saturday, Sept. 13, and will be available for Week 2.

49ers OT Trent Williams (knee) and WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) returned to a limited practice on Friday and were both listed as questionable for Sunday's game at New Orleans.
Footballguys view: Williams is a grizzled vet who plays through most injuries. Expect him to go against a middling Saints defensive line. Jennings was seen dunking a ball over the goal post and appeared to be ready to play, although the 49ers signed Kendrick Bourne this week, so he should have a role. Jennings wasn't having a big impact on the game last week before his injury, so it's not clear that he's a good play this week even if he is active and starting. George Kittle being out could help concentrate targets on the wide receivers and Christian McCaffrey, although backup quarterback Mac Jones will start, which could lower the ceiling for the whole offense. |
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 12, and has been ruled out for Week 2. WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) and OT Trent Williams (knee) were limited during practice and are listed as questionable. OG Ben Bartch (elbow, knee), DE Nick Bosa (non-injury), LB Luke Gifford (knee), RB Jordan James (finger), QB Mac Jones (knee), RB Christian McCaffrey (calf), OG Dominick Puni (knee) and WR Jordan Watkins (ankle) fully participated in practice and are not on the injury report.

Free-agent QB Mike White (Bills) recently worked out for the San Francisco 49ers.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones will start Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan reportedly loved Jones coming out of college, but the front office decided to move up for Trey Lance. Now, Jones gets to prove Shanahan right as the team's starter. Purdy is week-to-week with a variation of turf toe, so Jones could be in the starting lineup for the foreseeable future. |

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (foot) has been ruled out for Week 2.
Footballguys view: 49ers GM John Lynch did say Purdy's injury is a week-to-week basis. Purdy is out in Week 2, and his status for the next month or so is up in the air. In the meantime, Mac Jones will start for the 49ers. A favorite of Kyle Shanahan when he came out of college, Jones will have an opportunity to impress in a good system. |
Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (toe) is out two to five weeks with a variant of turf toe.
Footballguys view: 49ers GM John Lynch said Purdy was going to be week-to-week with this injury. Mac Jones starts for the 49ers while Purdy misses time. |

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) appears to be a long shot to play in the Week 2 game and could be sidelined for several weeks, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: With Purdy likely out, Mac Jones should get the start for the 49ers. Much like Sam Darnold, Jones was supposedly a favorite of Shanahan coming out of college. The Shanahan system can elevate the play of the quarterback, so it will be interesting to see how Jones operates the offense. He's a low-end QB2 for Fantasy GMs who play in start-2 QB or superflex leagues. |

Link to storySan Francisco 49ers TE Brayden Willis could be elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster with TE George Kittle (hamstring) expected to miss the next month. If Willis is on the active roster, he'd be behind TEs Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges.

San Francisco 49ers TE Luke Farrell totaled 44 snaps in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks after TE George Kittle (hamstring) left the game in the second quarter. It appears he'll be the starter going forward, with TE Jake Tonges as the primary backup.
Footballguys view: Farrell was signed earlier this year to a three-year contract. The former Jaguars tight end is mostly a blocker with only 36 catches over the last four years. A fifth-round pick out of Ohio State (2021), Farrell has never caught a touchdown pass in the NFL. Fantasy GMs have better options on the waiver wire if they lost Kittle for the next few weeks. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Kendrick Bourne could play as soon as Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints, as WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) nursing a shoulder injury sustained in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Footballguys view: Let's see who practices this week for the 49ers. They are banged up all over the offense and may even be starting Mac Jones at quarterback. There are too many questions to see Bourne as a fantasy asset if he gets out there for the 49ers in Week 2. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (calf) made it through the Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks without any setbacks, but he played 76 percent of the offensive snaps, as opposed to 85 percent of the snaps in the Week 1 game in 2023, which was a lopsided win. RB Brian Robinson Jr. spelled him frequently.

San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones might get the start in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints if QB Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) cannot go, and practice squad QB Adrian Martinez might serve as the backup.

San Francisco 49ers LB Yetur Gross-Matos (knee) was a surprise addition to the lineup in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, as he missed all of the spring practices, and a majority of training camp and the preseason. Still, he managed to tie for the team lead in quarterback pressures with three.

San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) underwent clean scans on his injured shoulder on Tuesday, Sept. 9. He avoided a serious injury and is considered day-to-day and has a chance to play in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
Footballguys view: Jennings had an MRI that came back clean on Monday, then a CT scan today. The next update on the wideout's condition will come when the 49ers release their first injury report of the week on Wednesday. Jennings had two catches for 16 yards before being forced out of the win over the Seahawks. With George Kittle (hamstring) now on injured reserve, the Niners need all the receiving help they can get. Remember, Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) is also day-to-day. Mac Jones would start against the Saints if Purdy doesn't. |

After waiving Jake Moody, the 49ers are bringing in veteran K Eddy Piñeiro for a workout, sources say.
Footballguys view: Piñeiro, who kicked for Niners special teams coordinator Brant Boyer with the Jets in 2021, made 89 percent of his field-goal attempts the last three years with the Panthers. Moody was released earlier today after two errant field-goal attempts -- a miss and a block -- in Seattle this past Sunday. We'll continue to watch for more here. |

The San Francisco 49ers waived kicker Jake Moody on Tuesday after the 2023 third-round pick missed two field goals in the season opener.
Footballguys view: Moody missed a 27-yard field goal on Sunday at Seattle and had a 30-yarder blocked, marking the first time San Francisco missed two field goals inside of 40 yards in the same game in 19 years. Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game, there was "no question" Moody would remain the kicker, but Shanahan's stance softened Monday, followed by today's move. The 49ers drafted Moody 99th overall in 2023. Now, his inconsistency forced a change just one game into his third season. We'll be watching for more on the plan to replace Moody as more details come to light. |

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (hamstring) has been placed on injured reserve and will miss a minimum of four weeks.
Footballguys view: Kittle suffered a hamstring injury during Sunday's season-opening win over the Seahawks, playing only 21 of the team's 76 offensive snaps. He finished the game with four catches for 25 yards with a touchdown. With Kittle out, the 49ers have Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges on their 53-man roster at tight end, with Brayden Willis on the practice squad. The list of available free agents at the position is led by New Orleans TE Juwan Johnson, the Patriots' Hunter Henry, Jacksonville's Brenton Strange, and Cleveland's Harold Fannin Jr. |

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) appears to have avoided major injury in Week 1, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Jennings, who dealt with a calf injury during training camp, exited Week 1 in the second half. He finished the game with two catches for 16 yards on five targets. As of Monday, Jennings' shoulder MRI had not revealed any issues, but the club was still awaiting results from a CT scan. With George Kittle (hamstring) out three to five weeks, and with Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) also ailing, the Niners need all the bodies they can get on the field in New Orleans in Week 2. The club's first injury report of the week will be released on Wednesday. |

San Francisco 49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk may receive a bigger role in the offense while TE George Kittle (hamstring) is sidelined, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner.

San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) underwent tests on the shoulder he injured during the Week 1 game but there is no timetable for his return at this point because the team is still waiting for results from some of the tests, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: Shanahan said an MRI came back clean, with the results of a CT scan still to come. Earlier Monday, the Niners and former wideout Kendrick Bourne agreed to a one-year deal, but the issues go beyond wide receiver here. TE George Kittle is expected to miss three to five weeks with a hamstring injury, and QB Brock Purdy is day-to-day with toe and shoulder injuries. Mac Jones would start against the Saints if Purdy can't play. Meanwhile, we'll be watching for more on Jennings as test results are reported. |

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (hamstring) is expected to miss several weeks because of the hamstring injury he suffered in Week 1, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting Kittle will miss three to five weeks. Adding to the concern, Kittle's anticipated absence makes him a candidate for short-term injured reserve, Rapoport added. Jake Tonges, who scored a game-winning touchdown with Kittle on the sidelines in Seattle, could help you fill the void, but the issues go beyond Kittle. Brock Purdy is considered day-to-day with toe and shoulder injuries, and Mac Jones could start against the Saints in Week 2. |
George Kittle player page
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) suffered a shoulder and toe injury during the Week 1 game, and his availability for Week 2 is uncertain at this point, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: According to local reports, the toe injury is more severe, and the quarterback is considered day-to-day. Mac Jones will start if Purdy cannot play. Jones has recent experience stepping in for a starting quarterback, appearing in 10 games in place of Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville last season and posting an even 8-8 TD-INT ratio in those games. He could be a viable pivot, especially against the Saints in Week 2. Remember, however, the Niners will be without TE George Kittle (hamstring) for 3-5 weeks, and Jauan Jennings' (shoulder) status is uncertain. We'll be monitoring the team closely this week. |
San Francisco 49ers WR Russell Gage Jr. reverted back to the practice squad Monday, Sept. 8, after being on the active roster for Week 1.

Free-agent WR Kendrick Bourne (Patriots) agreed to a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, Sept. 8. The deal is worth up to $5 million.
Footballguys view: The move comes a day after the 49ers lost tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Jauan Jennings to injuries in their season opener. Shanahan said both players would get MRIs to determine the extent of their injuries. The Niners were already missing wideouts Brandon Aiyuk and Demarcus Robinson, so it's easy to see why the team was in the market for receiving help. Bourne played for the 49ers from 2017 to 2020, so he has familiarity with head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense that could help him find a role quickly in his second tour of duty with the team. |

San Francisco 49ers RT Colton McKivitz signed a three-year, $45 million extension Monday, Sept. 8, with $27 million guaranteed.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (hamstring) is scheduled to underdog an MRI after suffering a hamstring injury in the Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday, Sept. 7.
Footballguys view: Before the injury, Kittle had four catches for 25 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown to stake San Francisco to a 7-0 lead. The 49ers went on to beat Seattle, 17-13, with Kittle's backup, Jake Tonges, securing three catches, including the go-ahead 4-yard score with 1:34 left. We'll have more on Kittle, who missed two games in 2024 -- in Weeks 3 and 11 -- with hamstring injuries, after results are announced. The 49ers play the Saints in Week 2. |
George Kittle player page
Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) will have an MRI for the shoulder injury he suffered in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday, Sept. 7.
Footballguys view: With both Jennings and George Kittle (hamstring) scheduled for MRIs, the 49ers are still hoping to add to their receiving corps in the coming days. Kendrick Bourne played his first four NFL seasons with the team and visited the Niners and Commanders last week as he looks for a new place to play. The 49ers made Bourne an offer, and Shanahan said after beating the Seahawks 17-13 that the team wants to bring Bourne back. We'll have more on Jennings -- and Bourne, if necessary -- in coming days. |

San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa finished with 6 solo tackles, including three tackles for loss, and a strip sack in a 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall caught four of his seven targets for a team-high 108 yards in a 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers RB Brian Robinson Jr. rushed nine times for 33 yards and caught a four-yard pass in a 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey rushed 22 times for 69 yards and caught nine of his 10 targets for 73 yards in a 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.
Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan did his best to get McCaffrey the ball, despite the questionable designation the running back carried into the game after suffering a calf injury in Thursday's practice. His 142 scrimmage yards were evidence of that. McCaffrey had his 31st career game with 50-plus rushing and 50-plus receiving yards, the second-most such games in NFL history (behind Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk: 41). No other player has 25-plus such games in his career. Even if the Niners go easy on him in practice this week, expect CMC to play a prominent role against the Saints in Week 2. |
