The New Orleans Saints acquired WR Ja'Lynn Polk and a seventh-round selection in the 2028 NFL Draft from the New England Patriots Saturday, Sept. 13, in exchange for a sixth-round selection in the 2027 NFL Draft, according to multiple sources.
Footballguys view: In late August, Polk underwent shoulder surgery and is out for the year. The 2024 second-round pick was in danger of making the Patriots final roster if he was healthy. Now, Polk gets to rehab with his new team with a fresh start in 2026. The Saints have been looking for wide receiver help for some time, as evidenced by this trade and the move to get Devaughn Vele from the Broncos earlier this summer. |
New Orleans Saints S Julian Blackmon (shoulder), G Trevor Penning (toe), and DL Chase Young (calf) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers. OT Taliese Fuaga (knee) was limited in practice on Friday, Sept. 12, and is listed as questionable. RB Velus Jones Jr. (knee), LS Zach Wood (elbow), and S Jordan Howden (oblique) practiced in full on Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

New Orleans Saints S Julian Blackmon (shoulder) is feared to have suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder during the Week 1 game, and is undergoing tests to see if he will need season-ending surgery, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: Blackmon, 27, has already recently suffered a torn labrum, having undergone surgery to repair it in January. But this injury is to a different part of the same labrum and may require season-ending surgery. A Colts third-round pick in 2020, Blackmon joined the Saints in July on a one-year deal. He's recorded 10 interceptions and 22 passes defended in his 67 career games. |

New Orleans Saints WR Rashid Shaheed hauled in six of his nine targets for 33 yards in Week 1 versus the Arizona Cardinals.
Link to storyNew Orleans Saints WR Chris Olave caught seven of 13 targets for 54 yards in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Footballguys view: Olave, who suffered multiple concussions last season, was hit hard during the fourth quarter. The Saints said that he suffered a chest injury and was considered questionable to return, but he quickly returned to the game. Could the volume he saw here become the norm? Spencer Rattler attempted a career-high 46 passes despite the score remaining fairly close the whole way. Olave will look to stay on the field and continue building chemistry with Rattler in a Week 2 home game against the 49ers. |
New Orleans Saints TE Juwan Johnson hauled in eight of his 11 targets for 76 yards in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Footballguys view: Johnson was Spencer Rattler's second favorite target after Chris Olave, and he was more productive on his double-digit target load. He'll be a top tight end pickup in PPR leagues and should be considered a fantasy TE1 next week against the 49ers. |

New Orleans Saints OG Trevor Penning (toe) and DE Chase Young (calf) did not practice on Friday Sept. 5, and have been ruled out for Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals. S Jordan Howden (oblique) was a limited participant all week and is listed as questionable. DT Khristian Boyd (hand) and CB Alontae Taylor (groin) were full participants on Friday and have been removed from the injury report.
Footballguys view: The Saints already seemed to be outgunned against the Cardinals on paper, and now they will be down one of their best pass rushers and a starting guard. James Conner and the Cardinals running game should put their stamp on this one. |

The New Orleans Saints waived WR Kevin Austin, PK Charlie Smyth, TE Treyton Welch and RB Marcus Yarns on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Link to storyThe Saints have made a QB decision, as they have announced that Spencer Rattler will be their Week 1 starter.
Footballguys view: Head coach Kellen Moore has praised the work done by second-rounder Tyler Shough, who now heads to the bench. Asked why he went with Rattler, Moore said, "He's just been consistent. He's made some really good decisions throughout this whole process, and his ability to make plays with his arm and his feet has certainly shown up." Rattler started six games for the Saints and played in seven of them. He threw for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, five interceptions, and completed 57 percent of his passes. He'll obviously need to fare well keep Shough on the bench. |

New Orleans Saints RB Cam Akers was released Monday, Aug. 25. The team also waived WR Roderick Daniels Jr., WR Moochie Dixon, TE Seth Green and TE Michael Jacobson.
Footballguys view: Akers, a 2020 second-round draft pick, signed with the Saints in June and has been competing for a backup spot behind Alvin Kamara. "NFL a crazy place," Akers wrote on X on Monday, adding a crying face emoji to his post. The Saints have not finalized their 53-man roster, but currently have Kamara, Kendre Miller, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Devin Neal, Marcus Yarns, and Velus Jones Jr. in their running back room. Miller has emerged as the primary backup to Kamara. |

New Orleans Saints QBs Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough continue to battle for the starting quarterback position Monday, Aug. 25.
Footballguys view: Rattler started two preseason games, including the finale, and Shough, the team's second-round pick in April's draft, got the other one. Jake Haener is listed alongside them on the team's unofficial depth chart, but signs point to Rattler or Shough getting the nod whenever Kellen Moore decides to put an end to the competition. After Saturday's game, Shough said that he believes he's shown what's needed to claim the job. Rattler said he has "no doubt" that he's ready for the starting job. Whatever the case, it shouldn't be long until we find out which way the Saints are going. |
New Orleans Saints OT Landon Young (ankle) was carted off the field during the first half of the preseason game versus the Denver Broncos Saturday, Aug. 23, due to an ankle injury.
Link to storyNew Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore plans to decide whether QB Spencer Rattler or QB Tyler Shough will be the team's starting quarterback during the upcoming week.
Footballguys view: This is as bad as it looks on the surface. The indecision isn't because both quarterbacks have played so well and both deserve to start. It could still be ok for Alvin Kamara, who will catch a ton of checkdown passes. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are also going at deep discounts which might be overestimating just how much the quarterback situation will affect their values this year. No matter how you cut it for fantasy, the Saints have the worst quarterback situation in the league. |
New Orleans Saints RB Devin Neal (hamstring) has a good chance to make the 53-man roster even though he is dealing with a hamstring injury, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Katherine Terrell.
Link to storyNew Orleans Saints WR Donovan Peoples-Jones was released Thursday, Aug. 21.
Footballguys view: The Saints traded with the Broncos for Devaughn Vele, so they had to make room for him on the roster. Peoples-Jones is a seasoned veteran with size, so perhaps some team will take a look at him later in the year. |

New Orleans Saints QB Spencer Rattler will be the starting quarterback for the final preseason game, according to head coach Kellen Moore.
Footballguys view: The Saints are the final team in the NFL to announce their starting quarterback. With Rattler starting this preseason finale he seems to be the front-runner for the job. The Saints quarterback situation squelches our excitement for the pass-catchers in New Orleans. |
Denver Broncos WR Devaughn Vele was acquired by the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, Aug. 20, in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round draft choice and a 2027 seventh-round draft choice.
Link to storyNew Orleans Saints QB Spencer Rattler and QB Tyler Shough will both play in the final preseason game, but head coach Kellen Moore will not say which quarterback will start the game.
Link to storyNew Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore said he does not plan to say if QB Spencer Rattler, QB Tyler Shough or QB Jake Haener will be the starting quarterback until after the final preseason game.
