Patriots | Cam Newton make take part in minicamp    Sun Jun 13, 12:11 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) made some throws during practice Friday, June 11, and may participate in the mandatory minicamp this week.

Footballguys view: It doesn't sound like his hand injury is more than a typical bump/bruise. The more we hear out of the New England, the more we believe Newton will play most if not all of the season.

Patriots | Hunter Henry expected to be fine    Thu Jun 10, 05:27 PM

New England Patriots TE Hunter Henry (leg) is expected to be fine after leaving practice Thursday, June 10 because of a lower leg injury.

Footballguys view: That's good news for the oft-injured veteran tight end. Henry is talented but he's never played a full season in his pro career and has been slowed down by nagging injuries. We'll see if he can participate in mandatory minicamp for the Patriots next week.

Patriots | Joshuah Bledsoe on field Thursday    Thu Jun 10, 02:11 PM

New England Patriots S Joshuah Bledsoe (wrist) was wearing a cast on his surgically repaired wrist during practice Thursday, June 10.

Patriots | Hunter Henry injured Thursday    Thu Jun 10, 01:27 PM

New England Patriots TE Hunter Henry (leg) suffered an apparent lower leg injury during practice Thursday, June 10, and was not able to return.

Footballguys view: Henry is a talented player but he has battled with various injuries during his pro career. The Patriots picked him up as a free agent this year, along with Jonnu Smith, to revamp the position. Not much is known about the severity of this injury, but it's something to monitor given his potential role and his history with missing time due to injury.

Patriots | Cam Newton misses practice    Thu Jun 10, 01:05 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) did not participate in practice Thursday, June 10, but should be fine, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

Footballguys view: As always, news and information about injured Patriots players is a bit hazy. Newton will miss OTAs and is expected to miss mandatory minicamp next week as well. His status for the start of training camp is unknown. If he's going to be fine then perhaps he'll be ready in late July. In the meantime, rookie first-round pick Mac Jones gets a larger opportunity to showcase his talent in practice.

Patriots | Isaiah Zuber pushing for a spot?    Sun Jun 6, 08:58 PM

New England Patriots WR Isaiah Zuber could give WR N'Keal Harry 'a run for his money' for the No. 4 receiver job, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: The fact that an undrafted second-year player could give a former first-round pick a 'run for his money' for the FOURTH spot on the depth chart says what you need to know about Harry's situation. Zuber is a talented player, and in college at Mississippi State (and Kansas State) he showed well as a slot receiver. He had a nose for the end zone and the versatility to work as a return man. We'll watch this battle between Zuber and Harry unfold in training camp.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham still in QB mix?    Sun Jun 6, 08:54 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham 'stepped up as the top option' during practice Friday, June 4, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Stidham is in the mix because he's out there practicing while Cam Newton (hand) is a little banged up and rookie Mac Jones gets up to speed in the pro game. We don't think Stidham wins the job, but he should be showing growth and development in his third NFL season.

Patriots | Terez Hall not on the field    Sun Jun 6, 12:24 PM

New England Patriots LB Terez Hall (ankle) has not participated in offseason workouts because he is recovering from ankle surgery, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hall flashed last year in limited duty, but will probably be behind Dont'a Hightower this year. Inside linebackers coach Jared Mayo expressed a little hesitation assuming that Hightower would come back at 2019 form, so Hall is a name file away if Hightower can't stay healthy.

Patriots | Mac Jones struggles Friday    Sun Jun 6, 12:23 PM

New England Patriots QB Mac Jones had some notable missed throws during practice Friday, June 4.

Footballguys view: Jones has a golden opportunity with Cam Newton sidelined by a hand injury, but it sounds like he has been outplayed by Jarrett Stidham. It's possible that he's not even the backup to open the season, but it's still very very early in the 2021 calendar to make any pronouncements. This was still not the news you were looking for if you hoped Jones would start early in 2021 and revitalize the Patriots passing game.

Patriots | Mac Jones wearing sleeve    Fri Jun 4, 11:40 PM

New England Patriots QB Mac Jones (leg) was wearing a compression sleeve on his lower right leg and did not participate in the final session of practice Friday, June 4.

Footballguys view: Jones has an opportunity to get more work with the starters with QB Cam Newton battling a hand injury. If Jones is a little banged up with this leg injury then Jarrett Stidham could get a few more looks. We'll see how much Jones can participate in the rest of OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

Patriots | Cam Newton injury update    Fri Jun 4, 07:58 PM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) has been diagnosed with a slight bone bruise in his hand after hitting the hand on a helmet during practice Friday, June 4, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The painful injury is not considered serious. Newton should miss the rest of OTAs and mandatory minicamp but most expect him to be 100 percent for training camp. While he's out, rookie first-round QB Mac Jones will get an opportunity to shine with the starters.

Patriots | No broken bones for Cam Newton    Fri Jun 4, 04:07 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (hand) does not have any broken bones in his hand but is scheduled to undergo more tests, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Good news for Newton and the Patriots here. Newton is expected to be 100 percent by the start of training camp, but he'll likely miss the rest of OTAs and mandatory minicamp. That means rookie first-round pick QB Mac Jones will get a chance to impress in practice. Most believe that Newton is the starter for Week 1, but Jones will start if Newton struggles again this year (if the rookie is ready).

Patriots | Marvin Hall added by Pats    Fri Jun 4, 01:14 PM

Free agent WR Marvin Hall (Browns) on Friday, June 4, signed with the New England Patriots, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hall has a chance to make the team because he provides field-stretching speed and tactical value in a limited role, but he would have to do enough to beat out seventh round pick Tre Nixon, and convince the team to carry seven wide receivers.

Patriots | Cam Newton sidelined at OTAs    Fri Jun 4, 01:05 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton (wrist) appeared to injure his right wrist or hand an hour into the team's OTA practice session Friday, June 4, and didn't return. He was seen flexing his wrist and simulating a throw follow-through afterward.

Footballguys view: Newton isn't in an official quarterback battle with first round pick Mac Jones, but if Jones impresses while Newton possibly misses time, that could change. Damien Harris' ADP would spike if Newton ends up losing out to Jones because Newton is the first option at the goal line - that would open up a big touchdown opportunity for Harris.

Patriots | Mac Jones earning respect    Fri Jun 4, 12:39 PM

New England Patriots QB Mac Jones is steadily making an impression in the team's OTAs, head coach Bill Belichick said Friday, June 4. 'He's working hard. He puts in a lot of time (and) certainly giving his very best effort to do everything we've asked him to do and do it the way we've asked him to do it, which is a great place to start,' Belichick said of the rookie first-round pick. 'He's earned a lot of respect for that. But he's got a long way to go. We'll see how it goes.'

Footballguys view: Jones will get more opportunities to impress while Cam Newton is nursing a hand injury. The team will have to make some hard choices on the offense they install based on their belief of which quarterback will start more games this year, but Jones could make that decision even harder with good practices.

Patriots | Cam Newton has better understanding    Thu Jun 3, 12:54 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton understands the offense much better in his second season, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Thursday, June 3. 'He came back this year at a much different position,' McDaniels said of Newton. 'He has a different grasp of the offense, a different understanding of the terminology. Now we're working on refining the precision, the details.'

Footballguys view: Newton was bad last year for the Patriots but he's back this year to prove that he can thrive in this system. He's the starter for now, but rookie first-round pick Mac Jones will push him for that spot when he's ready. Newton is going off the board at QB25 (13.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | J.J. Taylor seeing a lot of work    Sun May 30, 01:06 PM

New England Patriots RB J.J. Taylor is receiving a lot of snaps during offseason workouts since RBs Sony Michel, James White and Brandon Bolden are skipping the workouts and RB Damien Harris (ankle) is not practicing.

Footballguys view: Taylor was undrafted out of Arizona in 2020 and has ability in space as a rusher, receiver and return man. He's a small back (5-feet, 6-inches and 185 pounds) who stays low and can hide behind his blockers. Taylor is not overly fast but he is explosive and can make quick cuts. We'll monitor him in the deepest of deep dynasty formats.

Patriots | Julio Jones may not be option for NE    Sun May 30, 12:56 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones may not be a trade option for the New England Patriots because the team likely would have trouble with his salary cap number this season and possibly next season, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: The salary for Jones in 2021 is set at $23 million and there is $40.5 million remaining in dead money on his deal. He's signed through the 2023 season, and his cap hit is roughly $19 million in 2022 and 2023. Earlier reports speculated Jones wants to play with QB Cam Newton but if the Patriots can't afford him then it's not going to happen.

Patriots | New coaches impress Hunter Henry    Fri May 28, 01:52 PM

New England Patriots TE Hunter Henry praised his new head coach (Bill Belichick) and offensive coordinator (Josh McDaniels) during a recent interview at OTAs. 'On the outside looking in, obviously they're great coaches,' Henry said. 'And then when you get hands-on with them, they're phenomenal as well, even more than you think. They're two of the best minds football can offer, so just trying to pick as much as I can from them and continue to learn.'

Footballguys view: The Patriots made a concentrated effort to upgrade their tight end room by adding both Henry and Jonnu Smith in free agency. Henry is a talented tight end, and if he stays healthy he can certainly have fantasy value. We'll see how the team wants to attack defenses this year with Henry and Smith. The presence of both will somewhat hold back what each does if it becomes a 50-50 split.

Patriots | Two Pats released    Thu May 27, 10:05 AM

New England Patriots FB Danny Vitale and signed TE Troy Fumagalli were released Thursday, May 27.

Footballguys view: It was going to be tough for Fumagalli to crack the roster with the Patriots. They drafted Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene last year and this offseason they added both Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith in free agency. Needless to say, the Patriots are stacked at the position.

Patriots | Cam Newton working on technique    Sun May 23, 12:09 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton has been working with a throwing coach this offseason to improve his technique, and several of his teammates noticed a difference during offseason workouts last week.

Footballguys view: Newton is getting more nuanced as a passer, and that work in the offseason should show up on the field. He's the starter for now but rookie first-round pick Mac Jones is the future at the position. Newton should begin the season as the starter but he may not finish the season at the top of the depth chart. If the team falters or if Jones takes a big step during the year, the Patriots will make a move.

Patriots | Mac Jones the right fit?    Sat May 22, 10:09 PM

New England Patriots QB Mac Jones 'works' for the offense, according to a coach in the AFC East. 'And they'll also be able to run the 'O' the way Josh McDaniels wants it run, especially with the two tight ends they added,' the coach said.

Footballguys view: Jones didn't fit every scheme out there, but he's a perfect fit for what New England does. The Alabama quarterback can win from the pocket with quick decision making and accurate throws to the short and intermediate range on the field. He may spend his rookie season as a backup to Cam Newton, but the future of this team could be in his hands and it could work out well given how his skill set fits what McDaniels does.

Patriots | Trade for Julio Jones discussed    Sat May 22, 02:25 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is a candidate to be traded this offseason, and the New England Patriots have had internal discussions about acquiring the wide receiver, according to a report Saturday, May 22.

Footballguys view: Jones has a cap hit of just over $23 million in 2021 with $40.5 million remaining in dead money. That's a big contract to move for a wide receiver who is 32-years old. Any team is going to have a big pill to swallow when it comes to salary cap hit. According to OverTheCap.com, the Patriots have only $15.9 million in cap space with some rookies left to sign.

Patriots | Julio Jones interested in Pats?    Fri May 21, 02:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is a candidate to be traded this offseason, and if he is, one of Jones' preferred landing spots is with the New England Patriots and QB Cam Newton, according to Patriots beat reporter Michael Holley. 'You know who (Jones) really wants to play with? ... He wants to play with Cam Newton. He likes Cam,' Holley says in a video posted Friday, May 21 . 'That's the other thing: He thinks (Falcons QB) Matt Ryan has lost a little zing on his deep ball.'

Footballguys view: The 49ers, Patriots and Raiders all seem like destinations we could see the veteran star receiver traded to. Jones has a $23 million cap hit in 2021 and a $20 million hit the following two years. Even with his age (32 years old) and recent injury history and high level of cap hit, there will be at least a few teams interested. Stay tuned.

Free-agent RB Tyler Gaffney (49ers) agreed to terms with the New England Patriots Thursday, May 20, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gaffney most recently was in the Pirates farm system as part of his bid to be a professional baseball player. He won two Super Bowl rings as a member of the Patriots in 2014 and 2016, but was on injured reserve and the practice squad when they won those years.

New England Patriots fourth-round draft pick RB Rhamondre Stevenson (Oklahoma) signed a four-year contract Wednesday, May 19. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Stevenson is a power back that can play roughly the same role that LeGarrette Blount did for the Patriots, but he can also contribute in the passing game and on special teams. The Patriots might basically redshirt him this year if Sony Michel continues to play like he did last year, but Stevenson should have a role in this multi-back backfield in 2022.

Patriots | Sony Michel's roster spot in danger?    Wed May 5, 01:06 PM

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel could potentially lose his roster spot to fourth-round rookie Rhamondre Stevenson because the latter is more likely to be a factor on special teams, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have a jam-packed backfield with Damien Harris, James White and Michel already on the roster. Michel, a first-round pick in 2018, saw his numbers go down in 2020 as he only appeared in eight games. He's got to stay healthy and impress if he wants to secure his spot on the 53-man roster. It sounds outlandish to hear that his roster spot may be in jeopardy but things change quickly around here and anything can happen.
