Vikings | J.J. McCarthy expected to miss next game Mon Sep 15, 02:42 PM
Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is not expected to play in the Week 3 game because of a sprained ankle, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: The injury is not expected to be long-term, but it means Carson Wentz is Minnesota's likely starter for Week 3 against the Bengals. McCarthy played most of Sunday's game behind a patchwork offensive line after center Ryan Kelly and left tackle Justin Skule left Sunday's game early because of concussions, so that's worth watching as well. Wentz got starts with the Rams and Chiefs in Week 18 the last two years, with starters resting. Sunday, if McCarthy is out, will be Wentz's first start with a team at full strength since 2022 with the Commanders. |
Pittsburgh Steelers LB Alex Highsmith (ankle) is not expected to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 2, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is feeling the aftereffects of getting battered by Green Bay on Thursday night. Daniels, who underwent an MRI following the Week 2 loss to the Packers, was diagnosed with a knee sprain, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported, per sources informed of the situation.
Footballguys view: Rapoport adds that the injury isn't expected to be a long-term issue, but Daniels' status for Week 3 is in doubt. Daniels had a final check-in the with team doctor on Monday, per Rapoport. Washington faces the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 21. They return to practice Wednesday. Marcus Mariota is the team's backup and has proven capable. While Daniels has never missed a start in his young NFL career, Mariota could very well be thrust into action. We'll be following up throughout the week. |

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. (wrist) was bothered by a wrist injury during the Week 2 game, according to head coach Liam Coen.
Footballguys view: Coen told reporters the wrist may have hampered the second-year receiver during a loss to the Bengals, a game in which Thomas dropped two crucial passes and caught four passes for 49 yards, despite being targeted by Trevor Lawrence 12 times. "He's kind of got a couple of things going on," Coen said. The coach wasn't specific about when the injury took place, but Thomas didn't mention he was hurt when talking to the media in the locker room after the game. He also didn't appear on any of the team's injury reports last week. We'll be watching for more. |
Houston Texans practice squad FB Jakob Johnson was elevated to the active roster Monday, Sept. 15, and will be available for the Week 2 game.

Tennessee Titans DT Jeffery Simmons agreed to a revised contract Monday, Sept. 15, that includes a $632,529 raise for the 2025 season.
Footballguys view: As SI.com noted, ever since he was drafted in 2019, Simmons has been one of the best defensive tackles in football. He's a two-time Second-Team All-Pro and a three-time Pro Bowler. He has four consecutive seasons of 5-plus sacks, and already has a sack in 2025. In fact, through two games, Simmons has been one of the Titans' best pass rushers. He's been credited with 10 pressures, five QB hits, four hurries, and the sack. He's on pace for 85 pressures, which would blow his career-high of 66 out of the water. Keeping him happy makes sense. |

Dallas Cowboys C Cooper Beebe (ankle) will miss six-to-eight weeks with a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 2. Based on the testing, the team is hopeful for the six-week end.
Footballguys view: Beebe was on the field for 73 of Dallas' 89 offensive snaps in Sunday's victory over the Giants. He was replaced by Brock Hoffman, who is likely to retain the center job in Beebe's absence. The Cowboys will be on the road to face the Bears in Week 3. |
Dallas Cowboys LB Kenneth Murray played all 67 defensive snaps in Week 2 against the New York Giants. Murray had five solo tackles and two assists.

San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones was 7-for-12 for 121 yards, three touchdowns and no INTs with a 132.3 passer rating on third down in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
Footballguys view: To be fair, Jones was effective throughout. In particular, his ability to play the roll-out game fits well in Shanahan's system. Jones targeted the intermediate level of the field (10-19 air yards) on 35.9 percent of his attempts, his highest rate in a game since 2021. He completed 9 of 14 attempts when targeting the intermediate area for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Sunday marked only the second time in Jones' career he's thrown for 250-plus yards and three TDs (once in 2023). It wasn't all perfect, but Jones gives the 49ers a viable option when Brock Purdy can't go. |

New York Jets QB Justin Fields (concussion) is in the concussion protocol and out of practice Monday, Sept. 15. He will have to practice in order to play in Week 3, head coach Aaron Glenn said. QB Tyrod Taylor is being prepared to start this week in case he is needed.
Footballguys view: Coach Aaron Glenn said Fields will continue to be evaluated. As previously noted, if Fields is unable to play Sunday at Tampa Bay, veteran backup Tyrod Taylor would start for New York. The Jets' next practice is Wednesday, and Glenn acknowledged Fields would need to be cleared from the concussion protocol and get in some time on the field if he's going to play against the Buccaneers. |

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (toe) will require surgery on his turf toe injury and miss a minimum of three months.
Footballguys view: Burrow was hurt in the second quarter of Sunday's 31-27 win over the Jaguars. Backup Jake Browning has proven capable in the past. On Sunday, he was 21-of-32 passing for 241 yards, with three total touchdowns (and three interceptions). Adding optimism for fantasy investors, Ja'Marr Chase came through with 14 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown, and Tee Higgins broke free on a 42-yard score in the third quarter with Browning at the helm. The hope is that Browning can continue to drive and keep their values high over the next three months, and possibly more. |

Atlanta Falcons RB Bijan Robinson posted 22 carries for 143 yards in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, while adding three receptions for 25 yards on five targets.
Footballguys view: The Falcons could barely reach the end zone in this one, but a barrage of field goals was more than enough to win 22-6 on "Sunday Night Football." But Robinson was on point. He became the first player since LeSean McCoy in 2013 to produce games of 100-plus rushing yards and 100-plus receiving yards to open a season. Can he have another big game this week? Going up against the Panthers on Sunday, Robinson certainly gets an appealing matchup. |

Link to storyMinnesota Vikings RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) ran five times for 23 yards in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons before checking out due to a hamstring injury. He was targeted once, but he did not have a catch.
Footballguys view: Jones was initially characterized as questionable, but he did not return to the 22-6 loss. If Jones misses time going forward, Jordan Mason will go from sharing time with Jones to playing a featured role. We'll have more on him as further details come to light. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy completed 11-of-21 passes for 158 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, while running five times for 25 yards.
Footballguys view: Six days after he erased three quarters of futility with three touchdowns in one quarter to lead the Vikings past the Bears, McCarthy had nothing to offer in this one. In the first half, he fumbled twice (both recovered by Minnesota), threw an interception, was sacked five times, and was pressured 11 times. While the Vikings' protection has to improve, so too does McCarthy's decision-making, accuracy, and overall play. He had an off-target rate of 24 percent; the league average in 2024 was 15 percent. McCarthy and the Vikings will try to regroup for Sunday's game against the Bengals. |
Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young completed 35-of-55 passes for a career-high 328 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals. He also ran twice for two yards, while he lost a fumble.
Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's David Newton notes, Young looked dreadful in the first quarter, committing two turnovers to give him five in his first five quarters this season. Then, in the second half, it all started to click. Young remained calm and steady, finishing with a career-high 328 passing yards and three touchdowns. Tetairoa McMillan posted six receptions for a game-high 100 yards, while Hunter Renfrow (2) and Chuba Hubbard had touchdown catches. The near comeback should provide some patience for Canales and Young. |

Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor rushed 25 times for 165 yards and caught two passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in a 29-28 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 2.
Footballguys view: Taylor's 165 rushing yards led all RBs in Week 2 and represent the second most rushing yards in a game through two games, trailing only Derrick Henry (169 in Week 1). Taylor delivered a key run of 68 yards early in the fourth quarter. Taylor also got involved as a pass catcher, taking a swing pass for 43 yards in the first quarter before catching a touchdown on a similar play from seven yards out a quarter later. Taylor now leads the NFL in rushing yards after two weeks with 236. The Colts face the Titans in Week 3. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones topped 300 yards passing for the first time since 2023, completing 23 of his 34 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown in a 29-28 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 2. He also ran for a touchdown.
Footballguys view: Jones' skeptics were eager to see how he might handle the test presented by the Broncos' defense after he carved up Miami's unit in Week 1, and he thrived for a second straight week. Jones operated the Colts' attack comfortably, while avoiding major mistakes. As NFL.com suggested, we're starting to see why Shane Steichen chose Jones as his starter during the preseason. Steichen kept the pressure off Jones with a balanced approach, which leaned on Jonathan Taylor and his ever-present big-play threat. If Indianapolis can maintain this level of balance throughout the season, Jones could prove to be consistently effective. |
