Dolphins | Jaelan Phillips option picked up    Mon Apr 29, 03:43 PM

Miami Dolphins DE Jaelan Phillips had his fifth-year option exercised by the team Monday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Phillips was part of a Dolphins defense that set the franchise single-season sack record (56.0) in 2023, where he tallied 6.5 sacks, a mark he's hit all three seasons. He's played in 42 games with 26 starts with Miami, totaling 146 tackles (88 solo), 22.0 sacks, one interception, five passes defensed, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries. He's just the second player in Dolphins history to begin his career with at least seven sacks in each of his first two NFL seasons. Phillips is currently DE12 on our Footballguys 2024 Draft Rankings.

Chiefs | Andy Reid Compares Xavier Worthy To DeSean Jackson    Mon Apr 29, 03:41 PM

Kansas City traded up to select wideout Xavier Worthy at No. 28 overall last Thursday after he set a scouting combine record with a 4.21 40-yard dash. While Worthy's speed invites comparisons to Tyreek Hill, HC Andy Reid brought up another one of his former speedy receivers when asked about the incoming rookie. "[Hill and Worthy are] different, and he'll put his own mark on things once he gets a feel for it," Reid said in his Thursday press conference. "That wasn't necessarily the comparison, as much as it was him being a good football player that was a good wide receiver. Now you add in there the return ability. I've had some guys like that Tyreek, DeSean Jackson -- probably body type a little more like DeSean."

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have won back-to-back Super Bowls after trading Hill during the 2022 offseason. But they have added a clear speed element back to their offense for 2024. First, the club signed receiver Marquise Brown to a one-year deal in free agency. They followed that up by selecting Worthy. The speedy duo should improve a receiving corps that struggled throughout the 2023 regular season. "Both of those two [Brown and Worthy] can run well. I think both love to play the game and are good football players. I think that that will help us," Reid said. It could also help fantasy managers looking to get more out of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the entire offense.

Dolphins | Jaylen Waddle's option picked up    Mon Apr 29, 03:39 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Jaylen Waddle will have his fifth-year option exercised by the team, the team announced Monday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Waddle recorded his third consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season in 2023, becoming the first player in franchise history to do so. He's started 47 games with Miami, recording 251 receptions for 3,385 yards (13.5 avg.) and 18 touchdowns. He holds the Dolphins record for the most receiving yards in the first three years of a career and set Dolphins rookie records in receptions (104) and receiving yards (1,015). Despite the impressive overall totals, Waddle, who finished as WR7 in 2022, saw his fantasy number fall off last year. The good news is his WR32 finish in 2023 could make him a value this year.

Broncos | Paton: Age, Experience Set Bo Nix Apart From The Crowd    Mon Apr 29, 03:04 PM

Broncos general manager George Paton told Mike Klis of 9NEWS Denver that Bo Nix's age and experience -- 61 starts in college -- appealed to a club that expects the rookie to hit the ground running. "You look at it, it's hard because this is new, but 24 years old is not that old for football," Paton said. "To me, the age, they're going to be more, especially with a guy like Bo Nix, 61 starts, we feel like he'll be more game-ready than if we were going to draft a 21-year-old."

Footballguys view: While some might contend Nix was a reach, the Broncos might be forgiven if they felt compelled to fire this shot after Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., and J.J. McCarthy all came off the board before the Broncos turn came up at No. 12. Remember: Since Peyton Manning's retirement, the Broncos have had 12 different QBs start for them. The team hopes Nix can end the club's eight-year streak of missing the postseason. He enters offseason workouts with a leg up on the starting gig over Jarrett Stidham, Ben DiNucci, and recent trade acquisition Zach Wilson.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce extended    Mon Apr 29, 02:19 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce agreed to a two-year contract extension making him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL, according to sources Monday, April 29.

Footballguys view: As NFL.com put it, "Kelce's career has been nothing if not remarkably consistent." The Cincinnati product racked up seven straight seasons of 1,000-plus receiving yards from 2016-2022, falling just shy of making it eight straight campaigns in 2023 with 93 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns in a Chiefs offense that needed the entire regular season to find its footing before making another run to a Super Bowl triumph. With additional weaponry on the outside (in the form of speedy wideouts Marquise Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy), it might be more difficult for opposing defenses to focus their attention on the veteran tight end, who is currently being drafted as TE2 in early best-ball drafts behind Detroit's Sam LaPorta.

Bills | Buffalo picks up Gregory Rousseau option    Mon Apr 29, 12:13 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Gregory Rousseau will have his fifth-year option exercised by the team, according to sources Monday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Rousseau, 24, has been a solid piece of the Bills defense, with 17.0 sacks, 30 tackles for loss, and 42 quarterback hits in his 46 games. In 2023, Rousseau had 5.0 sacks with 12 tackles for loss, and 18 QB hits in 16 games. He also recorded four passes defensed with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He remains a viable DE in IDP leagues.

Patriots | Christian Barmore signs massive deal    Mon Apr 29, 11:05 AM

New England Patriots DT Christian Barmore signed a four-year, $84 million extension Monday, April 29. The deal is worth up to $92 million.

Footballguys view: As NFL.com noted, Barmore has been a rising star in New England for the past several seasons. Though he's started just 11 games in three years, he's had a starter-like impact on the Patriots' defense. The penetrator is coming off a career-high 8.5 sacks in 2023, and generated 53 QB pressures, per Next Gen Stats, 11th most among all interior defenders.

Jaguars | Jarvis Landry to attend Jaguars camp    Mon Apr 29, 08:13 AM

Free-agent WR Jarvis Landry (Browns) is expected to work out at the Jacksonville Jaguars' rookie camp.

Footballguys view: Landry last played in 2022 for the Saints, but he struggled with an ankle injury suffered in Week 3 of that season that led to his appearing in nine games. He drew 39 targets and caught 25 passes for 272 yards and one touchdown. Landry could never recuperate from the ankle injury, leading to New Orleans putting him on injured reserve. His chances of returning to fantasy relevance in Jacksonville seem thin.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott back to Dallas    Mon Apr 29, 08:10 AM

Free-agent RB Ezekiel Elliott (Patriots) agreed to a undisclosed deal with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Elliott will likely be a significant contributor in his return to Dallas. The Cowboys did not select a running back in last weekend's draft despite losing leading rusher Tony Pollard in free agency. With Rico Dowdle, Royce Freeman, and Deuce Vaughn also available, Elliott might not handle all the carries. Still, expecting him to get enough to work to return value on his current RB60 Average Draft Position, is more than reasonable.

Texans | Tank Dell OK after gunshot    Sun Apr 28, 04:38 PM

Houston Texans WR Tank Dell was the victim of a gun shot on Saturday, April 27, but the wound was minor and he has been released from the hospital, the team announced.

Footballguys view: Dell was a bystander during a shooting at a private event in Sanford where authorities say a teenage gunman wounded 10 people after an altercation. A Texans spokesperson told ESPN that Dell isn't seriously injured and was released from the hospital and was traveling back to Houston on Sunday. Dell finished his 2023 rookie season with 709 yards and seven touchdowns. But his year was cut short after he suffered a broken leg in an early December game against the Denver Broncos. Last month, HC DeMeco Ryans said Dell was on track with his rehab and was participating in offseason activities, and the coach added that he was excited to have him back.

Giants | Theo Johnson drafted as Darren Waller insurance?    Sun Apr 28, 02:22 PM

New York Giants TE Theo Johnson was drafted with Darren Waller's potential retirement in mind, according to general manager Joe Schoen on Saturday, April 27. 'We had to take that into account for sure,' Schoen said.

Footballguys view: Johnson is one of those players who could be a much better pro than he was in college. His tape from Penn State is inconsistent, but you can see the tools that make him an intriguing player. You can move him around the formation, and Johnson has a size/speed combination that gives him dangerous potential. We'll see what Johnson's role could be depending on what happens with Waller.
